duaneallen Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 Hey guys, haven't been here in a while. I'd like to "dress up" my 2000 535 with some new hardware and such. I'd like to change out the Grovers for something more classic looking, like Klusons. What do you guys recommend for this kind of tuner? I'd like as little modification to the guitar as possible; direct drop in would be perfect. Thanks.
DLDTEX Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 I had Kluson's on a 535 installed from the factory. The D string failed and I replaced with Grover's. Plenty "dressed up" for me. They work. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
t0aj15 Posted January 13, 2017 Posted January 13, 2017 My 535 originally came with the standard Grover nickle plated kidney bean tuners, they worked fine but looked like crap. I switched them out for the VERY classic looking Grover Vintage Deluxe tuners....they work even better and absolutely make this guitar look like Kalamazoo ala 1959. http://www.stewmac.com/Hardware_and_Parts/Tuning_Machines/Solid_Peghead_Guitar_Tuning_Machines/Grover_Vintage_135_Series_3and3_Tuners.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=shopping&utm_campaign=2017-01-gp&gclid=CPOMv8KBvtECFdm3wAod0PsL7g

Did you have to do any extra drilling for the new Grovers?
Millennium Maestro Posted January 13, 2017 Posted January 13, 2017 The guitar should have originally equipped with Grovers should be 102N, 502N is a super sweet locking 18-1 ratio tuner. I REALLY REALLY like the Grover kluson deluxe 135N. the bottom holes should line up, just add 6 top screws YEAH....My artsy photo! HAHAHAHA
t0aj15 Posted January 13, 2017 Posted January 13, 2017 Thanks for that. Did you have to do any extra drilling for the new Grovers? The bottom holes line up but you'll have to drill holes for the top screws.
kidsmoke Posted January 13, 2017 Posted January 13, 2017 I went from stock Grovers to the TonePros/Kluson replacement. I've used these and the Grovers (put them on a 150), and personally prefer the TP/K's What Millenium said, with these or the Grover's, the bottom screw will line up perfectly, allowing you to use the new hole as a perfect template for the top screws. In my case I intentionally went with "aged" hardware on the entire guitar, so you can see they aren't shiny. I love the Kluson's on Kalamazoo wood. the Gotoh 510's are a fantastic tuner. Easily the most comfortable knob I've ever used. VERY high quality. I dropped them onto one of my acoustics. Tremendous functional and cosmetic upgrade. these are the 510 mini's. Due to the hole location, these will NOT drop into your 535 without creating a new hole and leaving one exposed.
Kuz Posted January 13, 2017 Posted January 13, 2017 Easy answer, Kluson Deluxe tuners. I replaced all the sperzel & Grover tuners on three 150s and my 535 & 555. They fit in fine. I bought the Kluson Deluxe turners from Sweetwater, they are hard to fine.

The posts fit perfectly. The bottom screw hole did NOT line up perfectly for me though. It was just slightly off so I filled it with a wood filler and redrilled it. As others have mentioned, of course you will need to drill for the top screw.
Vanschoyck Posted January 13, 2017 Posted January 13, 2017 It didn't do so much for the way they look, but I put these on my 535 and my 575. They have higher gear ration than the Grovers, they work more smoothly, and they are lighter and more stream lined - the housing is much smaller by about half. https://www.allparts.com/TK-7740-010-Gotoh-3x3-Chrome-Keys_p_3940.html Looks wise I like the Kluson style, but the Gotohs drop right in with no new screw holes.
Gitfiddler Posted January 14, 2017 Posted January 14, 2017 These.... (mic drop).... Mic drop indeed! I'd love to install a set of Grover Deluxe tuners like that on my 150. I can't stand the Grover Imperials that Ed Roman ordered for his 'Class of 59' editions way back when! They work fine, but to me, look bizarre and out of place on this git.
DLDTEX Posted January 15, 2017 Posted January 15, 2017 I was fortunate to get Grover Deluxe on my 150 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
RhoadsScholar Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 You can buy the grover imperial ends and just add them to what you already have. Love the look of imperials
Spectrum13 Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 I rather like the way smaller and darker tuners look on a narrow headstock.

I think you should get rid of that defective guitar to an outstanding Guy in Vegas! Those are not the common tuners for a Co59, did you try to pull one off to see if they were after the fact add ons? I Believe those are Grover Imperials
Millennium Maestro Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 These.... (mic drop).... Another happy customer!

(See below). If I can replace just the tuner ends with Grover Deluxe, that would be great.
Millennium Maestro Posted January 17, 2017 Posted January 17, 2017 CO59s mostly used Rotomatic 109C tunershttps://www.grotro.com/Grover/ROTOMATICS/784b94de-24a5-4b57-a9cf-3558bdc69466/Super-Rotomatics-109-Series

TalismanRich Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 Got it. They're still ugly. Can the ends be swapped out? I'm pretty sure you can just unscrew the buttons and replace them. My preference would probably be the Grover 102s with tulip buttons.

LOL If I replace the tuner buttons, this will be the perfect 150...and no longer 'defective'! And Guy, you already gots dibbs, brother. Hopefully all of this side-bar chatter has helped the OP with his 535 tuner question.
