rwinking Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 So I bought Eljay's 576 a few months back and it is a stunning guitar. It came with Alumitones which to me weren't very warm for a jazz box. Dimarzio turned me on to their newest PAF prototype and DAMN! Just stunning tone....really old vintage warm type sound. I think the Alumitone PAFs would be really nice on some kind of R&R flavored guitar (I have them for sale very reasonably here on the non Heritage goods site) but big body jazz boxes have to have that old fashioned tone and these delivered. it is like a different guitar.. Anyway, my wife doesn't give a rat's ass about such things so I turn to you guys to share my intimate feelings about such stuff..... rick
111518 Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Anyway, my wife doesn't give a rat's ass about such things so I turn to you guys to share my intimate feelings about such stuff..... rick I understand completely, For years, beginning as a teenager, I spent hours every week hanging out in a guitar shop, sometimes working, sometimes not, talking guitars (and the state of the world in general.) with local musicians. Sort of like the corner pub in some cultures, I guess. Then, college, grad school, moving away from my hometown, all meant that social part of my relationship to guitars went away. Then, I found HOC. When I log on, I always think about the feeling I got when I walked into Rick's Guitar Shop, and listened for what was being played or for the voices of the regulars, or, when I was working and in the shop by myself, when the door would open. Pickups sound cool. I've always liked DiMarzio's PAF's, and, they reside in a couple of the guitars I've owned for the longest time.
golferwave Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Enjoy the new pickups. I like the DiMarzio 36th Anniversary PAF's and have heard good things about their new line as well. If they sound good to your ears then it's a go!
rwinking Posted January 17, 2017 Author Posted January 17, 2017 I think we should change the name of HOC to Rick's Guitar Shop.It has a homey feel to it. These new Dimarzio's are not in production yet I don't think. I have the Anniversary PAF's in an H-150 and like them but these are the first of his that are almost boutique like. Perfect for the 576 which is a different kind of guitar anyway. It's unlike anything in my arsenal.....Like something between a 575 and a Johnny Smith.
tulk1 Posted January 17, 2017 Posted January 17, 2017 Don't have any DiMarzio 'buckets, but I do have their single coils in my EJ Strat. Dig 'Em. Can imagine the proto HBs are dandy.

Gitfiddler Posted January 17, 2017 Posted January 17, 2017 OK, Rick, how did you come by this boo-teekie-like set of DiMarzio paf's that are not currently in production? And what secret handshake did you use to obtain them? You've really got me curious.

rwinking Posted January 17, 2017 Author Posted January 17, 2017 Larry is a guitar student of mine and lets me try out his new pickups and critique them. I guess I need to say that I am not involved with the company and am not doing this for business reasons. I have a Gibson floating Johnny Smith on my LG and these new Dimarzio's blow it away for warmth. He just emailed me about them: " You're the first round of tests. The version you have were built with a long Alnico 5 magnets, enamel wire and no potting. (very vintage) When I get back, it will be fun to compare them to sets of the original PAFs in my ES335."

That tripped me up a few times on the first few reads. Still kind of amazed by it. Probably shouldnt be but I am.
