Bought a used 535 with P92's... questions!

Hi All. Just bought a new to me , used 535. The previous owner installed a set of Fralin P92s. I am in love with the neck pickup clean. But when I play with gain on them, especially the bridge, it sounds very sterile and hifi sounding. Not good. Wondering if these pickups just aren't a good fit for the guitar or I'm missing something. Thoughts?

I think it is personal taste. P90s have a kind of twang that I like in certain guitars. The Epiphone Casino and Gibson 330 had P90s and they are cool in there. I think a P92 is like a quiet P 90? All that being said, I would rather have a humbucker in a 535. I have Seth Lovers in mine

I, too, am not a big P-90 fan. I have had them in several guitars and always find I swap them out. In a 335 I prefer SD '59's. They just sound "right" to me. I do not care for the Schallers that come in Heritage Guitars from the factory. I have a 336 with a SD JB in the bridge and I'm getting used to it. Didn't like it at first, but am liking it more now.

Of course, your mileage may vary.

Thanks all! Went to Wolfe yesterday and they were kind enough to let me try out some heritages with different pickups.

You can't just stop there. :dontknow: You got to say what you played, what was in them, what you liked, etc. Unspoken forum law.

Ditto, my 535 came stock with Schallers and right away I switched them for SD 59's.

I've been told that the number of turns of wire around the core of a P-92 has a big effect

on the sound. They should be tuned to the guitar you're using them on.

more = thicker, fatter, mid-heavy

less = thinner, clearer

too few = weak and overly bright

It could be that the specific bridge pickup on your guitar was just the wrong choice.
