khmr33 Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 Ishtar and Minerva are getting ready for PSP X! Ishtar just got Schaller three hole pickup rings delivered special from AllParts. We're getting that neck pickup ring sorted out soon! I've roughed out a stencil for a replacement pickguard, but if anyone has an old original shape plastic pickguard I'd love to get a tracing of it still. PM me if you can help and I'll PayPal you a little scratch for the trouble and postage... Doesn't matter if it's righty or lefty. Minerva just came out of hibernation, after hiding all winter away from the heaters. I'm thinking maybe she might like Ishtar's old nickel Grover tuners, since the Klusons on there aren't original anyway... might as well put something functional on there. Minerva is celebrating her 100th birthday this year, which should make for a very special visit to the place of her birth during PSP X. Will she be the oldest girl at the party? TalismanRich Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 You and LeftyAlicia should hit it off at PSP! Minerva is looking REALLY spry for 100! As for a lefty pickguard, I would think that you could just flip over a standard righty guard and use that as a template for the new one. The difference should be in the taper around the edges, but the shape would be the same. If you have someone to cut a new guard, ask them and see if that would work. If not, check with the factory. They do make lefty guard.

There's a place in Florida that does all manner of custom pickguards, no problem there. I also like the Heritage style pickguard, so a tracing of one of those would be cool and I could maybe get both and decide what I like or what fits best... The factory can't help with a plastic pickguard, because they don't make them anymore. (Even though the H150 on the website still has one pictured, boo) They only do the fancy $130 wood pickguards now, which is fine but I'm not getting one of those anytime soon. If they were still offering plastic pickguards at the factory, I would have ordered one already.
TalismanRich Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 I could trace the wooden guard from my H157. You could test fit it before sending off to have a plastic guard made. I prefer the wood, but I understand that they are pretty costly compared to the plastic.
LittleLeroy Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 A virtual embarrassment of warm browns and golds in that pic. Very nice! I'm working on the exact same Gibson model for a client. He says his is from the 1920's and still has the original tuners. She needs a re-fret then she'll be good for another 100 years. Should be interesting finding the correct fret wire!
schundog Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 What an amazing guitar to bring "home" for it's 100th year! Look forward to meeting you (and her.)

I have the original tailpiece and pickguard... The tailpiece wouldn't hold together even with twenty layers of structural epoxy and the pickguard won't do me any good while it's left handed. I should consider a floating bridge that can intonate properly, just turning the original around isn't doing me any favors
Polo Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 Hello khmr33, Just wanted to chime in and quickly give up the props to both of your guitars and the killer coat/hat/scarf combo you've got going on in the avatar! I like yer stye partner.
khmr33 Posted May 2, 2017 Author Posted May 2, 2017 Here's the L-1 label. The writing is getting quite faded, so I had to exaggerate the details.
Jim W Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 Hmmm. I will have to check, but Alicia might have one you can use as a template I imagine they are the same as a 157
TalismanRich Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 KHMR, I've scanned in my 157 guard. These scans were done at 300dpi, 7.5 inches x 10 inches. The scan from the bottom, which would be your top, has a ruler next to it. From the cutaway of the bridge pickup to the tip of the point is 13.0 cm. Try downloading these and print them at actual size. You should be able to test fit it and then if it works, pass it on to someone who can cut the guard you want. Bottom pic with scale Top pic One thing you will need is the bracket to hold the guard. Its a simple L bracket with a threaded hold for the screw that holds the guard. If you look closely at the Heritage website, the 150 guard is SLIGHTLY more pointed on the cutaway side compared to the wooden 157. This is probably because the binding is tough to get around that corner. Still, I prefer it to the original LP shape, but that's a personal preference. And if you get a chance, get with Jim and Alicia. She's got a nice lefty 157 that might show you a little more of what you need. Good luck!
