Guitar sounds like dreck clean due to the compression on his mic. Why, oh why, can't people demo guitars without a limiter on the video camera? But the hi gain channel sounds great and at least he plays all 3 selector positions.

 

You can tell he hates the logo.

Why, oh why, can't people demo guitars without a limiter on the video camera?

 

 

I agree with you but many cameras (phones) do not have the capability to turn off the limiter or it's buried in some menu. If people here want to do that and you can't find it, look also for something called "ALC". That stands for automatic level control.

It takes no time to run a decent mic into a simple but decent recording device and sync it and the camera. Run two mic's if needed, one for the room sound and one for the amp.

All our favourite songs were recorded with mics not iphones or direct through mic sims. Thats how we first learned about the guitar sounds we like, listening to amps sounds captured with mics, not iphones. Mic's are a big part of the sound and its a great reference to hear mic'd demo's. Cuts out a lot of the guess work for online shopping for me.

Just stick an industry standard mic in front of the amp and I will know what to expect in my own or any room.

I also dont understand why some people make long videos of them talking when all I want to hear is the guitar, amp or pedal. Just run text along with the video with the specs in it. I dont want to hear anyone talk in a gear demo. I dont care who they are, if you are still talking after 20secs in Im heading off to a Mike Hermans vid or someone else that can without speaking once give a thorough demo in the time it takes for others to list the gear theyre using.

A bit of skepticism on my part about Phil McKnight....

 

Does he choose to do a demo or not if someone gives him something to try?

 

Is he paid or otherwise compensated for this review?

 

I like his demos and his 5 Facts You May Not Know clips.

I wish I could figure out how to record a live amp. My last band had one guy who did the recording, but it always sounded like a cheap cassette player recording...

Man, some of what I said was over statement and hyperbole. I was having a rant and some of it was me being what I imagine ironic might be.

My advice, with my limited experience and ability in that area, to record anything, just buy a good mic and a good recording device and practice pointing the mic at the amp until it sounds right. If it doesnt seem to be getting there, try the amp dials.

The guys I know that seem to consistently capture good guitar noises really worked hard and practiced at capturing and recording good guitar noises at some stage.
