brentrocks Posted June 30, 2018 Author Posted June 30, 2018 The guitar arrived today.....I decided to attack the headstock first. there is a big chip missing off the treble side...oh well It went together and glued up well IMG_7628 by brent HENDERSON, on Flickr IMG_7629 by brent HENDERSON, on Flickr IMG_7630 by brent HENDERSON, on Flickr IMG_7631 by brent HENDERSON, on Flickr IMG_7633 by brent HENDERSON, on Flickr
brentrocks Posted June 30, 2018 Author Posted June 30, 2018 Time for stage 2 The neck pocket break was nice and tight. I lightly scraped off remaining glue film from the insides of the pocket and the heel before gluing. The break was left in a way that made it very easy to line up and make sure that it was going back in the right place. I brushed on a hearty dose of tight bond to all the appropriate areas that were to make contact. Gently slid the neck back into position, checked to make sure that all edges were ozzzing….and then applied the clamp. I will probably let the neck clamp set for at least 48 hours before I take it off....realistically, I think it only needs 24 hours for the wood to absorb the glue and cure....but I'm not gonna take any chances. This is by far the boldest attempt at a guitar repair I have ever done....but that's how you learn and get better, right? RJLII Posted June 30, 2018 Posted June 30, 2018 Tight bond 1 is the right call. Not as much open time as Tightbond 2 but you don’t need it. Glad to hear you scraped off the old glue. This could wind up being a great player grade guitar. The kind of thing you take to barn jams where adult refreshments might be served.
golferwave Posted June 30, 2018 Posted June 30, 2018 Good looking repair Brent, Looking forward to seeing the finished product!
brentrocks Posted June 30, 2018 Author Posted June 30, 2018 I’m not gonna string it up until Monday night. Keep our fingers crossed!!!!
FredZepp Posted June 30, 2018 Posted June 30, 2018 This is going to be interesting.. Can't wait to see how it ends up.

Looks like they put the guitar in the cage with the gorilla they used in the American Tourister luggage commercials years ago. Good luck Brent, I know you can do it! I am appalled by your lack of sensitivity Scott. That commercial turned out to be the big break that Koko needed in order to lead a productive life - eventually getting hired by UPS as Michigan's first Wait a second...!

TalismanRich Posted June 30, 2018 Posted June 30, 2018 Brent, have you considered a little wood filler and a respray of the headstock repair? You might even be able to fill a few of the little dents in the wood.

Genericmusic Posted July 1, 2018 Posted July 1, 2018 Nice fix. I usually mist the "open wood with water several times before clamping. The moisture opens the grain and allows deeper penetration of the glue. Titebond 1 was a good call. The extra clamping time is a good idea. Good work. Can't wait to hear it in action.
brentrocks Posted July 1, 2018 Author Posted July 1, 2018 I purposely ordered new locking tuners to force me to keep it clamped longer.....I tend to be impatient. tuners come tomorrow
ElNumero Posted July 1, 2018 Posted July 1, 2018 This is like a drama movie unfolding...... You could go to work with Dan Erlewine with all the experience you are getting. He used to live in Ann Arbor too!
HANGAR18 Posted July 1, 2018 Posted July 1, 2018 Brent, my wife said I can't buy that guitar from you under any circumstances. So, there's that.
Farmboyjo Posted July 1, 2018 Posted July 1, 2018 I saw this one on eBay. With the two breaks, I wondered if it was one the guitars that were intentionally destroyed a few months ago - and somebody just pulled it out of the pile off the loading dock. Was watching this one when it was super cheap but quit when I thought it wasn't a great deal anymore. Obviously a bad call by me. Nice work Brent! I never would have thought of doing the work myself but you're making it look easy. Sure excited to see how this all turns out.
brentrocks Posted July 1, 2018 Author Posted July 1, 2018 I just wanted to say, regardless of the outcome, THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR THE POSITIVE SUPPORT!!!! I’m not a great player and I’m not a pro Luther but I try hard and I always like to share my experiences with my fellow players and enthusiasts. It’s fun for me.
RJLII Posted July 1, 2018 Posted July 1, 2018 I was watching a Pete Thorn video a while back and he was talking about a thinline semi he has that had a headstock break. After the repair the guitar was magical. I thought long and hard about this in the context of the Brentster. I conclude that if the repair is executed properly and the guitar does indeed become magical, he will become a great player with no more than six or eight lessons as opposed to the several hundred he used to claim it would take. I like his odds. Just saying.
brentrocks Posted July 2, 2018 Author Posted July 2, 2018 Well....ill be honest. I was biting my nails in anticipation. I did the deed today....strung it up!!! It passed with flying colors! It sets up great...low action. I haven't been able to play it through a REAL amp yet because my basement is flooding and I had to put my Marshal in the garage. I did play it through my lil Peavey solid state and it sounds really nice. Needless to say, I'm very pleased with myself for fixing this. FredZepp Posted July 2, 2018 Posted July 2, 2018 Sounds great.. glad to see it's solid and ready to rock. I like that wood pickguard too. I bet that it howls through the Marshall . ( sorry to hear about your basement )
brentrocks Posted July 2, 2018 Author Posted July 2, 2018 Thanks Fred!! 535 and Seths is about as good as it gets!!
