Buying advice on a 150

Hey Guys,

I am eyeing up a 150 that Jay Wolfe has.  It has a SD Custom Custom in the bridge, and an Alnico Pro II on the neck.  I currently own a 150 with 2 SD 59's in it.  My question is, will there be a noticeable difference in sound between the 2?  As you have probably seen from many of my previous posts, I am looking for a more aggressive, distorted,80's metal sound in another Heritage.  Don't get me wrong, I love the one I have.  I would hate to buy it and have two 150's that sound the same.  Should I just bite the bullet, pull the trigger and quit torturing myself?  Thanks

Get a 150 and load it with a L500C in the neck and L500 in the bridge from www.billlawrence.com. They do everything well, including the 80s stuff. Sounds preposterous, but, nonetheless, true. I cover Maiden, Priest, BOC, as well as Skynyrd, Zeppelin, Steppenwolf, Cocker, and about 70 others in my cover band -- those pickups do it ALL.

Do it!!!! (You know you want to  ;) )

You can ALWAYS change the pickups out, you should really check out www.billlawrence.com and go to this page

The L500 pick supposed to be able to accomodate everything from jazz to metal. I like the vibe of his site, he seems approachable, like the Heritage folks. Just read some of the articles on his site, about magnetic theory etc. He REALLY knows his stuff. And on top of it, since he runs a family shop, his prices are very reasonable.

I am seriously thinking of replacing my bridge Seth Lover w a Bill Lawrence.

Yes, it does sound different. How do I know? I played that guitar a couple months ago.

It sounds OK, but it wasn't MY sound, as I prefer the Seth Lovers. YMMV!

What do you mean by OK?  Just not your taste, and if so, would it meet my tastes?  I actually like the wine red top better in terms of looks.  You probably played that one since it had Seth Lovers in it.  Did you like that one?

Like you said, it just wasn't my taste. For instance, a lot of people like the SD '59s. I don't care for them personally, as I find them to be too muddy; I like the "airy" sound that the Seth Lovers provide.

Unfortunately, I didn't play that H150 that much. I played it for just a few minutes, and decided it wasn't for me.  However, you might like it. SD's website has sound samples for each of their pickups; that might help you decide. Additionally, you could always use Jay's 48-hour trial period to see if it suits you.

They didn't have the Wine Red H150 in stock when I was there--if it was, I might have taken it home with me! That top is gorgeous! And the Seth Lovers is icing on the cake!

I know you only played it for a few minutes, but was it more distorted or aggressive than other 150's?  Too muddy?  Can you compare it to 59's?  I'm finding the muddy sound at times with mine.  The sound bites for SD haven't been very helpful to me.  Adn it always sounds different when you get it home.  Thanks Thundersteel.  Do you want to go back and play a few more for me? :D

Believe me, if I lived closer, I'd be there more often than annually!

I played it through a Heritage amplifer, so there was virtually no distortion, just mainly cleans (I think the Heritage amps are more for country/jazz).  It sounded muddy to me, but that may have been the amplifer, and not the guitar. I didn't use a distortion pedal with other guitars until later in the day.
