GearUp Posted June 30, 2021 Posted June 30, 2021 Hey everyone! I just acquired my friends 535. He picked it up new in Las Vegas from Ed Roman around 2002-04 and basically sat in his closet until now ( I know right?!). I love my Tele’s and Gretschs’ and this will be a great addition. There were some connection issues so I took it in for a full setup. I got it back today and I’m not pleased with how the nut was cut and how the strings now sit. Specifically the gap between the E and A along with the D sitting higher. Am I crazy or is this a crap job? I’m glad to be a member and hopefully will contribute some knowledge I’ve learned along the way! Serial number S3 2904
ledzeffer Posted June 30, 2021 Posted June 30, 2021 Welcome and hello to a fellow Blues Deluxe member. I got mine when Ed was discontinuing Heritage and it's from 2003. Mine is based on the Prospect body which is a smaller 535. Does the label say 535 or Prospect in yours. That gold top is sweet.
Gitfiddler Posted June 30, 2021 Posted June 30, 2021 Here's an old link to Roman's specs. These are all based on the Heritage Prospect, not H-535. http://www.edroman.com/detail_sheets/heritage_blues_deluxe_d733.html
MartyGrass Posted July 1, 2021 Posted July 1, 2021 The nut slotting is a little off. Those are probably black back Seymour Duncans in the guitar, which is neither a Prospect or a 535. In a way it's both: A Prospect with a solid block. This should be a great guitar. You'll get varying advice on what to do with the guitar at this point. Maybe nothing if you like how it plays. The string spacing looks like both the A and D are off a little. For a DIY project, if you feel you must change the string separation, fill the D slot and recut it. Worst case scenario is you need a new nut, which is where you are now if you don't like what you got.
rockabilly69 Posted July 1, 2021 Posted July 1, 2021 Play it before you write it off, that spacing between the A and D, I know many people like a little extra space there and do that on purpose! Congrats on your new guitar, and as others have said that guitar is not a H535 variant, it's based on a Prospect.
High Flying Bird Posted July 1, 2021 Posted July 1, 2021 I have owned 3 535s and still have one. I could tell it was a Prospect the second I saw it. I don't think that matters at all. Get it set up the way you like. Here are my 535s. The one with the text is my first. The message rings true. I traded it to Mike Novello. Goldyrocks is now owned by one of my best friends. The chestnut burst is my main guitar. Would I have liked to have kept them all? Of course, but camera gear cost money -more than guitar money. Fill up those chambers with sound and get back to us. ? Play the hell out of it! That, not the Hokey Pokey, is really what it is all about.

DetroitBlues Posted July 1, 2021 Posted July 1, 2021 You're concern with the nut is a very common issue with pre-2017 Heritages. They were done by hand and meant for final setup at a dealership. However, most dealers just pulled them out of the box, tuned them up, and put them on the wall. Then people bought them and complained about poor setups, crudely cut nuts, and general bad perception of Heritage guitars. The new owners and leaders decided Heritages need to be perfect out of the box, so there are fewer issues like this since 2017. Congrats on the Blues Deluxe. Very cool guitar, love that bound mahogany pickguard. Very classy.
