tsp17 Posted September 28 Posted September 28 Considering head version of these - Anyone had experience with one or both? Always in search of a great clean portable 6L6 tone….not too bright, not too dark, ….tight low end…
yoslate Posted September 30 Posted September 30 Had a Suhr Badger 30 (head, through a Marshall 1965A 4x10). Great amp with punchy cleans that I loved! A swell pedal platform, too!
Jaguarguy Posted October 1 Posted October 1 The EZG50 is Z's take of a Super Reverb. It's built like a tank. Here's a couple of videos that I think show off some of it's capabilities. 1
bolero Posted October 2 Posted October 2 He should have called it a "Super Z-verb" the name is kinda ambiguous & not very descriptive 1
bolero Posted October 2 Posted October 2 Although he makes a Z-verb already ( I have one ) so maybe that's why 1
tsp17 Posted October 6 Author Posted October 6 (edited) @Jaguarguy thanks for the videos. These give a better sense of it that the ones i found. I got a 20th anniversary version i found on eBay. The seller is in Asheville, so who knows when he’ll be able to ship, but i wanted to support musicians so i sent him the money. Hopefully a little cash infusion will help. He said that “most” of his family and friends are ok and accounted for. Sheesh. Scary stuff. He said the nearest functional UPS is an hour away. Roads flooded…geez. Tough going for those folks. I told him not to ship until safe to go. P.S. the Z-verb is 6v6. This one is 6L6. Looking forward to getting it (someday) Edited October 6 by tsp17 1 1
Jaguarguy Posted October 7 Posted October 7 BTW - here's a pic of my EZG 50. It was my first Dr. Z. Sitting on top of it is a Dr. Z Galaxie that was owned by Joe Walsh. 1 1
tsp17 Posted October 7 Author Posted October 7 @Jaguarguy very cool. Here’s mine awaiting shipment. Looking forward to getting it someday… 2 1
tsp17 Posted October 7 Author Posted October 7 (edited) @Jaguarguydid you special order that red tolex and wood front panel or did they offer it that way as an option? Very cool vibe. also- correcting my prior post- my purchase was on Reverb. Not eBay. Edited October 7 by tsp17

The wood front was made by Harvey Reams. https://www.facebook.com/harveyreamswoodworking/
bolero Posted October 11 Posted October 11 Do you get high from the tolex on that ex-Joe Walsh amp, once it warms up? Joe Walsh is the man....Joe Walsh for president!
bolero Posted October 11 Posted October 11 Harvey Reams? Wasn't he in a bunch of Boogie Nights style movies in the 70s? I think I've seen him naked.

tsp17 Posted October 12 Author Posted October 12 (edited) Dr. Z EZG-50 is now in the house. This thing is a beast. Big muscular sound. Can barely turn up to 11:00 volume even with the ‘pre’ at 9-10:00. Geez. 50 watts but feels like more. Love the 6L6 feel. reverb was a little noisy/hum. Changed the tube. Much better. Jaguarguy Posted October 13 Posted October 13 Even though the EZG is 50 watts, they are Dr. Z watts! 1

Thx. it is a lot of AMP. maybe too much for my needs, but I’ll play around with it for a while and see if I can dial it in. I didn’t believe the hype about Z WATTS. It is a beast. I get it now. I’m playing small/med places. Keeping the “pre” low seems to work best for me. Feedback an issue with hollow and semi which is what i play. I’ll keep tweaking…. I bet cranked it is close to as loud as a Twin Reverb or Dual Showman. Scary. 1

That's why solid and semi-hollow body gits were created. You might need to invest in a 535 for playing out with that Z rig. 🙂

Doc has a mod available which is a volume control (plus various other updates) for $259 if you really like the amp.

I've heard about that. just sent Dr. Z an email to find out more. what does it entail if you know? I'm replacing some tubes today and it is coming into form....new Mesa rectifier tube, New Mesa 6L6 GC (also ordered some of my favorite TAD 6L6 to try). replaced the installed 12ax7s with TAD 7025. waiting on some new 12at7 to be delivered.... Jaguarguy Posted October 19 Posted October 19 I've kept mine stock so not sure exactly what it entails - I just know I've heard only good things about it. I do know that the bass becomes more useable with a full sweep of the dial (used to max out early on the dial) and that people comment on earlier break-up.
tsp17 Posted October 20 Author Posted October 20 thx @Jaguarguy. i think i’ll keep mine as is now too. i talked to Drt. Z and they say that the mod involves installing a choke and some other tweaks to make it more “user friendly”. I did some tube tweaking and I’ve got it sounding REALLY GOOD, so i’ll keep it stock for now. It was on the noisy side with the tubes that came in it, so i tried a few and settled on reissue Tung Sol 12ax7s that really did the trick. Between the cost of the mod and shipping (and hassle factor), maybe later. Next time i take it in to my tech i’ll have him install bias points and adjustment screw on the back panel for easier tube swapping.
