So in the thread regarding customizing a Heritage, the poker chip came up. I thought I might start another thread on this. I never gave it much thought until I looked today and found that my 80s H-170 and H-140 both have the much malligned poker chip. Were these stock back then and later removed as my newer H-150s never had them? I bought both of these guitars used a long time ago and now wonder if someone "customized" them or was this how they were back then?

If they were not stock in the 80s I need to get rid of them pronto before any of you poke fun at me.

Spoke too soon.....my H-150 from 2008 (V serial number)has a poker chip too. Both it and My H-170 also have a more angular pickguard whereas the other two H=150s have pickguards that follow the rounded contour of the body. Wow, that last phrase made me hot....

My "D" serial # H-140 has the old style pickguard and poker chip.   I've left it stock except that one of the Schaller pickups was bad.   I put in a pair of SD  Alnico Pro IIs in it.

Interesting! So they must have gotten rid of the poker chip and changed the pickguard at some point. I just looked at my 86 Les Paul Custom Lite and it has the same style pickguard as the earlier Heritages like mine and TalismanRich's H-140. My 86 H-140 has no pickguard at all.

I've never saw the poker chips on a catalog model.  Obviously, I wasn't old enough to know back when they sold new in a shop.

My assumption is dealers and individual owners added the poker chip.

My 1985 H140 did not have one.

Ive seen them on a lot of early 170s and 140s.  But the font on the poker chip is different than the Gibson font.

In 2005-ish (maybe 2006 or 2007), I picked up at the factory a 150 Goldtop that I custom ordered through a dealer but just wanted to pickup at Heritage.  I asked Marv if he would install a poker chip and Gibson LP pickguard that I bought and brought with me on my brand new 150 Goldtop.

He said, "We used to install those years ago at Heritage, but due to the lawsuit we don't use/install them anymore".    But he was kind enough to do it anyhow, he said to just keep it between us.  So now the secret is out.... I think he is safe from litigation.

No poker chips on my H150s, and personally I like them better that way, I tried one on each of them and off they came! And I prefer the Heritage pickguard to the Gibson guard, I like the way it follows the body contours. I don't feel the same way about their semi-hollow pickguards, they look too small to me, and definitely not as nice shape wise as the H150 guards. I had MojoAxe make me one Gibson style for my H535P90 that cus sold me and I love it.
