Gitfiddler Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 I just saw a beautiful Sweet 16 for sale that had what appears to be a coil tapped/split humbucker in the neck. That really sounds like a great idea, but I've never done it. Have any of you archtop users tapped or split?
Spectrum13 Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 Sorry Git, never split but it would be interesting... and Prails might be even more so...
Gitfiddler Posted February 25, 2009 Author Posted February 25, 2009 Yep, SD Prails are really a tempting pickup. Maybe I'll drop a set in a jazz box one of these days, but since I've already got HRW's in my 575, I was thinking of coil tapping the neck for more variety.
cosmikdebriis Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 The main problem with coil tapping (actually earthing/grounding out one of the coils) is the reduced output of a single coil over a humbucker. One way to partially overcome this is to use a switch that puts both coils in parallel rather than just chop one out. Problem with that is it doesn't sound quite so much like a single coil. Whatever you do it's always a compromise and IMHO always a little disappointing. I'd say P Rails are the best option.
big bob Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 I have p-rails in my 575 and am really happy with them.. I also have split coils on the mayocaster and while not true single coil sound pretty darn close.
Spectrum13 Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 Big Bob, can't believe you missed the opportunity to post a photo of your P-railed 575!
