morbidrockgod Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 Hi there! My Heritage H-150CM came with a nut that is higher on the high strings' side. Is it normal, part of the Plek job, or just a flaw that went unnoticed?
Thundersteel Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 Hard for me to tell from the pic, but as long as there's no buzzing, or tuning/stability issues, I wouldn't worry about it.
tulk1 Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 That is a very close up pic. Would have been a bit better if the nut was the focal point, tho'. Anyway, from that pic, I don't see it. Gonna have to agree with T-Steel on this.
Paul P Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 What's important is the height of the strings off the first fret. If it's too high it'll be hard to play something like a barre'd F chord in first position (too low and there'll be buzz all over the neck). To test the height, fret a string between the 2nd and 3rd frets. Then press on the string on to see how much clearance there is to the first fret. There should be just a hair more than none, and you should hear a 'tink' when you tap on the string. I have one string that looks like it's touching but does not cause any buzz. Any more clearance and it'll be hard on your fingers. Usually there's a bit more clearance towards the bass strings. So the position of the nut itself is not an issue, since the slots are cut (at least they should be cut) with the nut in place.

And special thanks to Paul P: I did exactly as you said and I could hear the "tink" on the strings as I fretted them against the first fret. The nut is higher on the high strings' side but these strings are sunk deep into the nut, as opposed to the lower strings. In other words, they are about the same height. Thank you very much! tulk1 Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 I had not heard that, either. Just tried it on the Millie NFH. Yeppers, nice little klinks going on. Thanks, Paul.
big bob Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 look, I'm sorry I just cant sit on it any longer... if you have problems with your nuts you should see a specialist. get some Calais or what ever, but don't I repeat don't put them in a plek machine..
