skydog Posted December 24, 2007 Posted December 24, 2007 First of all, Merry Christmas to everyone here! Now, everyone here should know that the factory supplied wiring/pots that come on a Heritage (as well as most any other new guitar) are for crap. What are your preferences for replacement parts?
Thundersteel Posted December 24, 2007 Posted December 24, 2007 I've never had any trouble with mine. However, I hear a lot of people like the RS upgrade kit.
Sparky Posted December 25, 2007 Posted December 25, 2007 If you think the components that come standard on a Heritage are crap... you should try one of those $100.00 SX guitars. The pots on those things are more like on/off switches... no sweep at all. I buy my replacement parts from Stew Mac... bridges and pots mostly. I buy SX and Agile guitars from Rondo and change pick-ups, pots, bridges and nuts. Damn fine instruments post mod, especially the Agiles.
skydog Posted December 25, 2007 Author Posted December 25, 2007 All I know is that on the stock pots on all my Heritages past and present, close to 95% of the range is from 0-3. After 3 there seems to be very little adjustment.
Yankeefan01 Posted December 25, 2007 Posted December 25, 2007 My H140 has 1MG volume pots and it screams with that. The person I bought it from said that one of the things Heritage had to do way back when was to limit the volume pots to 250K. Not sure how true it is but my H140 has the range to go from nice and clean to Crazy Horse distortion at the right turn of the volume.
rooster Posted December 26, 2007 Posted December 26, 2007 I use RS Superpots for the volumes (500K for humbuckers, 250K for singles) and CTS for the tones (again, 500K for humbuckers, 250K for singles). Also, paper and oil caps, and I'm there. Wish they were stock, but swapping them out is no biggee. rooster.
Krohawk1 Posted December 26, 2007 Posted December 26, 2007 I've use PRS pots. A little expensive, but the difference is amazing!
Kazwell Posted December 27, 2007 Posted December 27, 2007 With all this talk of electronics upgrades I went over to RS Guitarworks and picked ordered me a complete premium vintage electronics upgrade kit. Not sure if replacing the selector switch and braided wiring is all that necessary, but I can use that for another guitar that happens to have a broken switch. Here's what the kit includes-put me back 80 bucks- (2) 500K RS Short-Shaft Superpots- We designed these pots in conjunction with CTS. Used for the volume controls in the kit, these pots have a custom taper that gives you a noticeable difference between each number on your volume control. You can finally roll your volume down to 2 or 1 and not loose any clarity, even in the neck position. A smoother resistor path make this the best pot to ever be used in the guitar. (2) 500K CTS Short-Shaft Audio taper pots (1) RS Paper and Oil GuitarCap® by Jensen .022. Some of our customers have asked us for a good vintage cap option for some time, so we went to Jensen and asked them to make a paper and oil capacitor as small as possible for that "woody" tone and they nailed it! The .022 microfarad GuitarCap® is best for the bridge position tone control of your guitar. (1) RS Paper and Oil GuitarCap® by Jensen .015- This is the same great GuitarCap® as above, just in .015 microfarad. This is best used for the neck tone control. (1) Length vintage-black wire- Used for the grounding in the circuit. (1) 4-foot length braided wire- Used for wiring switch. (1) Long 3-way toggle switch- Manufactured by Switchcraft. (1) Input Jack- Manufactured by Switchcraft. And here's what they promise this kit will do for my sound: All of the above components combine to create unprecedented clarity in your overall tone. This increase in clarity will also equate to an increase in note bloom, harmonic complexity, and, in some cases, sustain. Because this kit increases the usability and intuitiveness of the controls onboard your guitar, you will achieve tones that you didn’t think were possible. The Vintage Upgrade Kits offer a warmer, woody tone. I sure hope this is enough of an upgrade from the exisiting parts in my H-150 to make this big of a difference.
Kazwell Posted December 27, 2007 Posted December 27, 2007 put me back 80 bucks- BTW-that included UPS ground shipping..
drewzee87t Posted December 29, 2007 Posted December 29, 2007 I have been looking at some of their stuff too. I am thinking to upgrade my millenium 2k. I find it has too trebly/harsh of a sound with the SD's and I don't get the tones I am looking for without rolling off the tone to practically off. Can anyone tell me if they have used these kits on the millenium style guitars with SD's and if the vintage or the treble tamer was the bomb? I am thinking the treble tamer. Additionally, how do you know which shaft size to get? The M2k is a LP style but I am not sure the pot shaft length..... Thanks
