smurph1 Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 No. I had a Peavy classic 50 combo that sounded great. Then I thought I was going to be Pearl Jam and sold it for the Classic 50 head with a 4x10 and 1x15 stack- it sound like crap- very brittle & edgy. It totally tainted my feelings on EL-84s. Then I started seeing all the touring rock groups (Pearl Jam, 10,000 Maniacs, ect) that were using the Peavy Classic 50s were using only the combos- I should have kept the combo! I had one of those..A tweed combo..Great Amp!! Sold it after I got my Flextone..IDIOT!! Oh Well..Maybe another one will turn up someday..I loved the distortion on that thing..My old Tele just loved it..
backline Posted May 23, 2009 Posted May 23, 2009 ...My old Tele just loved it.. Old Tele's make a lot of stuff sound good. I had one that made a Polytone amp rock! Once when I was trying to get a Gretsch w Dynasonic pickups to sound right by dialing in a Dr Z 38 Studio, after I got it pretty good I plugged in a Tele w Nocaster pu's and saw God!
bolero Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 heh, right, you can't beat an old tele!! one of the best sounds I have ever got ( that's blues talk ) was a cranked hiwatt DR103 thru an old fane 4x12, using a beatup white tele....I saw God that day too...I think God likes telecasters, haha
Neanderthal Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 I use a Marshall JCM2000 DSL100 w/1960A cab. No pedals really, just Boss TU-2, GE-7, and NS-2 on my board.
Doug Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 I have a Marshall Valvestate 100 combo that I am thinking of selling. Maybe I'll bring it to PSP II for the swap meet. It has a footswitch, and is in perfect condition. I have switched to a Peavey Classic 30 and I use an additional Fender Blues Deluxe cabinet.
pegleg32 Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 I'm playing through a Jacques Overtube into a Tweed Fender Blues Jr that has the BillM mods including the presence control. I put JJ/Tesla tubes and an Eminance Cannibus Rex speaker in it. With my new H-535, the whole rig has just come alive. I didn't think I would ever attain this kind of sound down in the music cave.
TruckbodyJones Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 I'm using a Rivera Suprema 55 watter , a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe ....cause it's lighter !!! and Marshall JCM 800 100 watter and a JCM 900 50 watter . Like the Rivera best ...but it's seventy pounds ( yes you know you are old when you buy equipment by weight not tone !) .....

One big reason I like my Tweed Super so much ..... it weighs the same as it's wattage: 28lbs. Oh, sounds awesome, too. Guess that helps. BTW, used to have a JCM900 4102 (100w). Probably one of my fav amps of all time.

I can't believe how many different tones there are in that Rivera...my Marshall is a Marshall but I'm still finding new sounds from the Rivera ...after a few years of using it. Now ...if I only had a roadie !!
TheRecordFable Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 I'm picking up a Fender Prosonic 210 combo tomorrow I'm excited. I have an American DeVille right now I'm going to run them in stereo.
t0aj15 Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 It seems as though in my 40+ years of playing I've pretty much come full circle when it comes to both guitars and amps. I started with hollow & semi hollow bodied Gibson guitars, moved through most all the solid body models of Gibson, Fender, and many other brands and am now back to using a few favorite American made guitars with the 535 being my favorite tone monster. For amps it's been very much the same, I started with a small Gibson combo and got bigger, louder, & a lot more expensive as the years went by. For the last nine years my primary amp has been a Boogie Mark IV head through a whole series of different cabs until I settled on a cab I like above all others, a front loaded sealed back 1-15" Lopo cab with an Eminence Commonwealth speaker. I also recently decided on another change in amp heads and tried a Carvin X100B series IV. I got tired of the 30+ knobs, switches, etc. on the Boogie and was looking to once again simplify my rig and this all tube amp is great, exactly what I was looking for. It has the best clean channel I've heard as well as the kind of crunch channel I've been looking for for years. So after years of wading through racks, efx, and overpriced processors I'm now back to plugging my guitar straight into the amp and the amp straight into the cab with only an MXR 10 band EQ in the loop.
Wolfi Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 I'm about to change my whole set up. In the future I will use two amp heads: HOOK Captain and Seymour Duncan Convertible. My pedals will be organized by the gigrig pro 14 (www.thegigrig.com ). I will use a Line 6 DL 4 Modeller, an MI Audio Tube Zone (only for the Marshall like stuff), a Retro Sonic Chorus, a xotic bb and a reverb machine. It looks like I'm gonne be broke in the nearer future. Depending on the location, I'll use 2 x 1x12 marshall 1912s with V 30 or 2 x 4 x12 marshall 1960s a with V 30
philipgustavson Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 1965 Fender Pro Reverb baby. Blackface, 40 watts , 2x12, reverb, VIBRATO!!! This amp is so freaking awesome. Roll down the tones with my H-550 for jazz gigs, crank the sucker with my tube screamer and my tele for that Texas blues, and for rock it really works well with a pedal board full of overdrives and distortions (think Sonic Youth, built to spill, etc...) The Vibrato literally turns heads all night when I play out at jam sessions... Of course, so do my Heritage guitars!
bluescat Posted September 7, 2009 Posted September 7, 2009 Gibson Goldtone GA15-RV...sweetest sounding amp I've ever heard. If I need more punch I add a second one. (It's nice having a pair of them) Where good tone and loud are needed I use a Roland Blues Cube BC-60 3/10 if there is no way to mic the Goldtones.
Steiner Posted September 7, 2009 Author Posted September 7, 2009 Hey Cat! Is this an older amp? You have two? Is it an EL84 or 6V6 toy? What speakers do they run? Can you not plug into a 4X12? 15 watts is down right unforgettable through a 4x12! Welcome to the collective. There's enough eccentricity here to fill most steins. We all seem to have our interests but ultimately concur that the Heritages provide a fond foundation. I simply must inquire; are you playing a Heritage? What drew you to the forum? Be very quiet about your Heritages. This board is stocked deep with those that require guitar porn. You're liable to get the dreaded "show us your stuff" reply! Welcome aboard!
bluescat Posted September 7, 2009 Posted September 7, 2009 The Goldtones are not older, but I think they are discontinued. Gibson bought Trace Elliot and these are Gibson's version of the Velocette. They later moved production to the US, and the US models don't sound nearly as good. They use Celestion Vintage 30 speakers (2) EL84 tubes, (2) 12AX7 tubes. It will run a 4x12 cab. They are class A amps, so they are loud. They run in triode/pentode mode, so you can cut the wattage down to 6 watts, crank the volume, and let them sing. They break up like melted chocolate that way. I haven't played for a few years, but have a Heritage H140-CM Translucent Blue, Seymour Duncan ’59 pickups, Gold Hardware, and a 2002 Heritage H150-CM Ultra HRW Pickups, Translucent Blue, flamed maple matching pickguard Gold Hardware.
iim7v7im7 Posted September 14, 2009 Posted September 14, 2009 Hi, I have two rigs; one for blues/rock and the other for jazz. Jazz = Acoustic Image Clarus 2R (http://www.acousticimg.com/products/prod_clarus.html). I use it with a Raezer's Edge Nighthawk 10" ER Cabinet (http://www.raezers-edge.com/product.htm). I play my Sweet 16 with this solid state rig for solo jazz chord melody. Blues = Allen Accomplice Head (http://www.allenamps.com/accomplice.php) with RCA 6V6s with a open back, 1x 12" cabinet with a scholz sugarcone(http://www.harryjoycerocks.com/speakers.htm). I use this with an attenuator (http://www.ultimateattenuator.com/index.html) and some OD and boost pedals from time to time. This is the rig that I will paly with the H535 when its built. Bob
Twin Posted September 27, 2009 Posted September 27, 2009 Two setups: Fender Twin ('68) / Hardwire tube distortion / Thomas organ Cry Baby ADA MP-1 / Marshall 9100 / Sonic 4 x 12 (Celestion 50S's) / Avatar 2 x12 (Hellatone 60's)
iim7v7im7 Posted September 27, 2009 Posted September 27, 2009 My jazz amp that I use with my Sweet 16, light weight 400w, the 10" speaker has incredible tight low end due to the fact that it is close backed and ported and and an extended range driver to boot. skydog Posted September 28, 2009 Posted September 28, 2009 my go to amp for several years now has been my Siegmund Midnight Special and Double Drive
teamshakenbake Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 I didnt see anyone post valvetech on this list I may have skipped a page or two but just in case this has not been mentioned the VAC 25 is a marvelous little amp that has served me well.
rjsanders Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 I didnt see anyone post valvetech on this list I may have skipped a page or two but just in case this has not been mentioned the VAC 25 is a marvelous little amp that has served me well. Valvetech gets a lotta on TGP and it's deserved. i caught Carolyn Wonderland in Portland @ the Waterfront Blues Festival last year and she was using a VAC 22 (i'm told, wasn't close enough to see). man, what a variety of amps are available now when i was growing up we only had blackface Fender and some Vox around here. some guys had Silvertones, a few did their own (Heathkit, Lafayette, Quement). later, around '69 or so you'd see Marshall...
wrxplayer Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 The questions I pose are: What are you using? What makes it special? What's under the hood? Where does it shine? I'll get some porn up today to show what's under the hood. I wanted to be here early and get things rolling. ;D First off, I play basic rock and roll. Since my GAS affliction overtook my logic--2 or 3 years ago--I've bought and sold a lot of amps. Here's the list of amps I've sold, best I can remember: Mojave, 65 Amps, Ceriatone, Brown Note (clone), Wallace, Rivera (twice), Crate, Fender, Budda, Heritage, Swart, Holland, Industrial Amps, and Goodsell. I am really happy to say that I have three amps and no longer feel a need to troll the on-line classified amp sections of the various guitar forums. The winners are: Sommatone Roaring 40 head w/ a Morgan 1x12 cab and Celestion Gold - This is a 4xEL84 head rated at 40 watts with a half power option. It has a very usable master volume and two channel volume controls (one bright, one regular) even though its a one channel amp. It has a boost. Mine doesn't have reverb but I'm told his reverb is great. The amp goes from moderate clean to saturated grind well. It is not a "clean machine" (the Holland Li'l Jimi was king there) but it gets clean enough for me. At half volume using the master volume it gets great tone at "bedroom" volume. Set at 40 watts and it can fill any room. It's a great rock amp and works well with strat style single coils, les pauls, and P90 guitars. Plus, Jimmy Somma is a super guy and his shop happens to be five minutes from where I live (though I bought this amp on ebay and it came from the Virgin Islands of all places). Blankenship FATboy combo w 12" tone tubby ceramic hempcone. I was looking for a Tweed Deluxe type with flexibility. I'm very happy w/ my choice. I chose this amp because it runs on 6V6 and 6L6 power tubes and the rectifier tube is likewise swappable (5AR4 or 5Y3). As a result depending on set up it runs at 10, 15, 18 or 25 watts . Thus, there's lots of flexibility. Looking for early breakup? Set it up at 10 watts and turn it up. Looking for headroom: Set it up at 25 watts. You get the idea. Also, it was in the emporium at a very good price. There are many super amps in this category making price a real factor. Fortunately I bought mine from a motivated seller. The amp sound magnificent and really nails the tweed sound. I had another boutique head + cab setup that cost more than twice as much but the FATboy knocked it into the emporium. It's also small and likely weighs in around 30/35 pounds, making it really portable. I doubt I'll ever sell it. Crate Vintage Club 50 (blond). I got this amp to keep in my band's rehearsal space. It's a 4xEL40 power section and 3 10" speakers. I paid $350 for it. It's got tons of power, handles pedals really well, sounds unbelievable. Does cleans great. A really super amp and the best bargain out there in less expensive tube amps in my opinion. The one downside--and it's significant--is that it's REALLY FREAKING HEAVY. I would not own this amp if I had to move it. But for my purposes its perfect.
