535 w/ P90's - why don't they make these?

Jay had some made with Duncan Phat Cats.  I personally would like to hear how the Fralin P92s sound in a 535, but heck yet a P90 equipped 535 would be sweet!

Yeah, I could go the 'bucker-sized P90 ish pickup, but i haven't found one that sounds as crazy good as old gibson or lollar p90's  :).

P90's coils are too wide to fit in a bucker size slot. I tried the harmonic design z90's, and duncan phat cats, but neither rang for me.

I tried the PhatCats in a Guild Bluesbird, but it really didn't sound that much different than the stock '59s that were in there. I know that Rio Grande has humbucker-sized P90s called Bastards/Fat Bastards, but I have never heard them in person.

Uh, buckers are widder than P90s.  As for a good sounding bucker sized P90 give the Fralin P92 a try.  It's a bit of a sleeper pickup, but I've yet to hear of anyone who didn't like it.

I've been discussing this H535 with P-90's idea with Jim Duerloo for months now & he's finally agreed to make some. A few customers have inquired about this for years.  I send Jim an initial order for a dozen to start with several weeks back, so this is a timely subject Dick.

I believe my H525 guitars have gotten those boys back into the P-90 frame of mind, and this is probably why he's agreed to make some. The coming months will tell if they actually can find time to make some. I certainly hope so & I'll post it here if they do.

Have you actually held a humbucker and a P-90 in your hands and measured them? Measured end-to-end in both dimensions, humbuckers and P-90's have the same length and width. The difference is that the brackets at each end of the humbucker, where you screw in the humbucker ring, aren't as wide as the bobbin, and guitars are routed to that shape instead of being routed for a rectangular cavity. If you could route the corners of the cavity to make it rectangular, a P-90 would drop in there quite nicely. Alternatively, you can trim a P-90's excess bobbin plate with wire cutters, Dremel a rectangular plastic plate out of pickguard material, drill pole piece holes, stick it on the P-90 with double-sided tape, then glue that plastic plate to the inside of a humbucker ring, and voila. Just make sure to use a humbucker ring with a flat top, even if its bottom may be curved to match your guitar top's arch.

EDIT: Harmonic Design's Z-90 uses a humbucker bobbin, which is why it doesn't sound like a P-90 regardless of how good or bad it sounds, but will drop right into a humbucker route with no modification. Likewise, Fralin's P-92--good or bad--won't sound like a P-90.

Are you talking about one of these? I got these months ago, if lefty no less. Lollar P90s, Antique Natural. It is on my website. I also have had a Prospect Standard with Lollar P90s, sold it to the first person to play it, and have another ordered.

Here's the Prospect with Lollar P90s. I loved this guitar. Only 7 lbs and the best tone I've ever got out of a semi-hollow. Great guitar. The next one I ordered is MINE!

I don't know what you are talking about. These guitars don't exist. They are the elusive Big Foot or Yetti.

You will have to see for yourself this July if the urban myth is true or not.  >:D

Okay, it's March!  I had to go way back to January to find even this thread.  Anything new going on with these?  Any member that has one gonna give us a little info on them?  Any fine dealers that check in here got any updates?

Inquiring minds want to know!

Search the posts.

I have the first production guitar (look below and click to enlarge).

They are Know in production and can be ordered and they are incredible!!!!

All the grit and grizzle of the p-90s on the bridge pup, with the warmth of the semi-hollow in the neck pup.

Good luck!

Well thanks Kuz, I saw your pic already in looking around the forum, beauty!  I also tried searching but I just joined and maybe I don't get the search on this board, I wasn't able to come up with anything but this thread and a couple of WTB posts.

I was hoping people here would be interested in sharing information but there seems to some reluctance to talk about this particular subject.  The Heritage website has a pic even but no info either.  I can pursue it with a dealer of course, and have met and dealt with Jay very happily, but the reason I go on guitar discussion boards is to discuss guitars with like minded people.

I do recognize that there just might not be that much to say at this point.

Click Search up on the top menu bar and then search for "535 p-90" you'll get a couple of different ones. The search function built in to SMF is rather weak sauce.

I don't think there is any reluctance to talk about the 535 / P-90s. Most likely it's because it's a new model any not many guys have them. ( Probably only one or two members, with Kuz being one of them. )

Thanks for your responses gentlemen.  I guess I can assume they are going to trickle out to dealers slowly, and as they do more discussion will surface.

I don't want to seem negative here after just joining (don't want my karma to go to a negative number!)  I've just been trying to find something about them after seeing a pic on the Heritage site--and no other reference!  I think I mostly want to get an idea of when they might be getting to dealers in enough numbers that I might get to try a two or three of them, I don't like to buy guitars without playing them first, and I mean the specific one I buy when at all possible.  I also am not buying guitars these days without moving others out first, so if I do get a P90 535, which sounds like a guitar I very much would want, I'd want a little advance idea of when it might be happening so I can look to move something out.  I also don't like to bug dealers unless I have the capability of buying right now.

No message board I've encountered has a really good search function, just the fact that this one will search three characters like P90 is a plus over many!  I do now see that using quotation marks helps a lot, thanks.  But I'm still only getting the two threads, maybe there has been a little more.  I would expect that when Kuz got his he would have had something to say about it!  But I'm not seeing it.  It's all cool though, great site!

I don't think any dealer will have two or three 535s with P90s in stock at one time.  You'll be

lucky if you see one, it's not a common model.  You say you've met Jay at Wolfe Guitars.

You're luckier than most if you live close by.  Most of us have to buy without trying out first.

Not the best way to go about it but when you have a guitar custom built or have no dealers

neaby it's hard to do otherwise.  Keep in mind Heritage is small potatoes.

Welcome to the club and good luck in your search.
