SouthpawGuy Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 I finally got around to taking some shots of the VIP 2  For those who are not aware of this model it is now discontinued. This one had HRWs factory fitted before it was shipped to me a few months ago now, thanks Brent ! This example is a C serial # from 1986. It has seen some serious use and I can only imagine how much playing time it has seen. Everything still works fine though. It has a set neck construction with a Kahler Flyer trem, an almost SG style pickguard, angled headstock, a three way selector, master volume and tone and a VIP knob for each pickup. The three mini switches are set up with the two outside ones for humbucker / coil tap / VIP and the middle mini switch is a kill switch. The neck has dots on both sides, why is anyones guess ! Sound wise it covers a lot of ground, I use it mostly for the humbuckers tones, the other tones are useful but there is the usual volume drop when going to single coil. The neck is very slim and seems wider than it is, again it is different to all of my other Heritages, not a bad thing at all, it's not a Strat or a Les Paul profile. The frets are wide and fairly low and access to the upper frets is very good indeed. As you can probably see from the pics I've screwed the HRWs way down to reduce the output, they are very much closer to the strings on this guitar than the '59s on my 575, and were pushing the front end of my amps too much for my taste. This one is a strange beast indeed, and I have to say that I am glad that I bought it, it is in complete contrast to my other Heritages and it does what it does very well indeed. SouthpawGuy Posted April 17, 2009 Author Posted April 17, 2009 i love that guitar...you were lucky to get it back... > It does have a certain attraction, a very unique feel to it. I just posted a couple of pics of it in a "super strat" thread in Harmony Central. It will be interesting to find out what reaction it gets !
tulk1 Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 Those are some awesome pics! Lots of knobs and switches, too. Excellent!!
Dick Seacup Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 I think I like the Firebird looking headstock on the VIP2 better than the "impaler" headstock on my 160V.
jacques Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 Great guitar, Paul. Once you put in the tremolo arm and get used to the Kahler, you will get hooked on the special sounds of this instrument and will start wondering why all your other guitars have hard tails...
SouthpawGuy Posted April 19, 2009 Author Posted April 19, 2009 Thanks guys, it is certainly different than the usual "super strat" type of guitar ! I haven't experimented with the Kahler yet, I remember in the '80s that I always wanted a guitar equipped with one but as is the norm they were not available on lefty guitars, at least not in Ireland. Better late than never !
thierryt64 Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 Very cool guitar indeed... and made 14 days exactly after my "Heritage super-Tele", the VIP2 twin sister, down to the ASB finish & variphase switches! Your beauty's serial# translates to May 14 1986, 1st guitar finished that day. My H-127 was completed April 30th 1986, 2nd of the day - and bought by yours truly in June of the same year :-) Have you unscrewed the back plate to look at the exact model code yet? I'll post mine if you show me yours > What a find coverplateinside.jpg coverplateinside.jpg_thumb

The pickups have been changed since I bought it, turns out the ones that were in it were Duncan custom shop JB's, I had presumed they were Schallers or Duncan Stag Mags. There are HRW's in it now with D-VIP. Brent took some pics of the guitar before the pickups were changed ... http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh98/SouthpawGuy/Heritage%20Stat/P1010130.jpg[/img] Control cavity ... http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh98/SouthpawGuy/Heritage%20Stat/P1010113.jpg[/img] I really like the look of your H-127, it would be really nice to find a lefty one of those !
thierryt64 Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 Thanks! Here it is surrounded by her creators RW_ML_H127.jpg RW_ML_H127.jpg_thumb
