Comparison to Historic LP?

Hi Gang;

New to this website/forum, but I am glad I found it. I am thinking about getting a Heritage H150 as an alternative to paying a fortune for another Historic Les Paul (although I'd really like one of the Heritage Class of 59 Les Pauls....awesome). Anyway, I was wondering if anyone could give me an honest comparison to the Historics. Do the Heritage Guitars have nitro finishes? How's the hardware? Are they weight relieved? Neck size (I prefer more of a 60 profile, as I have smaller hands)? Any good dealers out there (not in California, so I don't have to pay our now nearly 10% sales tax)?

Anyway, what say? Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks.

JT

We have a lot of these comparison posts lately. Search for VOS LP ect...

I personally hate Heritage guitars and their business ethics.

Really? Why do you post here then?

I believe he's joking...

To answer your questions, Heritage does use nitro finishes. They used to use Schaller hardware, but I believe they now use the standard TOM bridge and tailpiece.

Also, Grover tuners are standard, as well as REAL mother-of-pearl inlays, vice the fugly plastic that Gibbo uses.

There H150s are NOT weight relieved, unless you get an LW (light weight) version, which are chambered. (I have one--it sounds very woody.)

The standard neck sizes are usually between a 50s and 60s neck. You can order one specifically to your liking if desired.

The most popular dealer is Wolfe Guitars in Florida, as he has the largest selection. Buffalo Brothers and J. Hale Music are also Heritage dealers.

WELCOME!

Hi and welcome to the HOC, greetings also from Ireland. There was a time when even mentioning the G word was not the done thing.

Now it's something that we can discuss like mature adults, and I'm all for it.

Seems the only thing we can't talk about now is monkeys.  :undecided:

... as you might have guessed already we do have a "HOC" sense of humour.  8)

I have had a number of  'Historics' including R8s, R9s, R0s and a couple of the Guitar Center 'GOs...all very fine guitars.  All well over 3k with the exception of the Guitar Centers - which were a tad over 2k.

The Heritages are exactly what they are - built where they are built - on some of the same machinery as the 'great' LPs - and by some of the artesians who built the 'great' LPs.

The only (what some feel is a BIG difference) is that the 'Historics' have long tenons, and some hardware.  The other BIG difference, IMHO, is that the Heritage guitars are hand crafted by the guys that built the 'long tenon' models in the late 50s - mid-80s.  And they cost MUCH less, are MUCH better - but don't have that 'name' on the headstock.  Sad really.  I'm thinkin' that if the Gibby hardware was so much better, the guys at Parsons Street wouldn't be using the (again IMHO) superior Schaller hardware.

BUY A HERITAGE - LESS MONEY - BETTER GUITAR!    :-*

Kuz posts here because he enjoys the role of pyromaniac in a match factory, and abject sarcasm is tolerated, if not always appreciated, on the HOC.  In fact, the HOC Admin. sponsors a very effective twelve-step Sarcastics Anonymous program....  By this time tomorrow, JT, you'll have a dozen informative posts in response to your questions.

Kuz is just bitter because he doesn't have any particularly nice Heritage guitars, and what he does have, he has only one of those "Smokey" cigarette pack amps in which to plug them....  Sad, really....

I think it's 'cos he missed out on one of those R8, or was it R9, things a while back.

Still sore I'd say.

"he has only one of those "Smokey" cigarette pack amps in which to plug them.... ". Well, Bruce Zinky makes those, so they can't be all bad. I love his Velvet amp; just sold the 50w version, as I was gassin for something else.

Sarcasm is fine; I practice it frequently myself.

Thanks for the info guys. I should be ordering an H150 in the not too distant future. I'll give Wolfe a call tomorrow.

BTW, I was watching the Gary Moore video from 1990 in Motreaux (or however you spell it), and he was using a Heritage for the first few songs; sounded great. Not sure what pickups he was using; they looked like those PJ Marx ones from the 80's. Does anyone know what kind of Heritage that was? It looked like a 150.

That would have been the Gary Moore signature model, Brent has one. I think it came stock with EMGs.

There I can be serious.

Absolutely!  I refer you to recent offerings on the "I love My Greenies" thread!  This rampant elitism must be staunched!  And while we're at it, lets get this sarcasm thing under control, before it spreads, like intellectual...kudzu....  And just what's with all of these monkeys?  How'd they get in here?

Just a man with the blues.

I have the blues because I wish we could go back to the good ol' days.... when HOC would cut your, ah um, NOSE off for talking about post '85 Gibbies. :P

I realize that Heritages are not the easiest to find in order to have a fair comparison but I am going to start doing my comparison via the Kuz time line...

    1. Kuz bought 3 Gibby LPs from 1991-93

    2. Kuz bought a '65 335 in late '93

    3. Kuz played his first Heritage 555 in 2004, and immediately bought it that day.

    4. Kuz sold all three Gibby LPs within next 3 months

    5. Kuz sold '65 335 to after a year of owning said 555 to increase stable of Heritage guitars

    6. Kuz currently owns 8 Heritage guitars

So enough said.

I guess I prefer the cheap "knock off" Gibbies.

(This last sentence is of course the BIGGEST pet peeve of my life. Having "copy" or "knock off" or "Cheap" or "Inexpensive" or "Cheaper than Gibson LP" or "Since I can't afford a Custom shop LP" or "What should I do?", attached to the words "Heritage guitar"!

No offense meant there. I have been playing G's since my youth, and only got to play one Heritage sometime in the early 90's (and yes, it was nice). I can't afford to keep paying G's prices, so I was hoping to find something comparable that wasn't priced highly based on the name. Judging by the devotion you guys show, it looks like Heritage is the right choice.

What? I hadn't posted on the Greenies thread until just now! Seriously! Look at the time stamps!!! Holy smokes!! My exclamation (full stop for you Brits!!!!) key has become intermittently stuck!!!!!!1!!!!

As to the monkeys...I honestly cannot remember how the monkey thing even started. It was my thread about getting the 170 with the ToneSucker embedded, but how it went to monkeys is lost in the mists of...well, beer, I guess.

Kuz- I don't remember anyone ever getting their panties in a bunch over the Gibbon thing. I must have missed some great opportunities to sow the seeds of mayhem and chaos. :'(

Man!  That was fast!  Good luck in the quest, JT!  While you're at it, go to Jay Wolfe's website, and look at his inventory on G-base.  Then get back to us....

No offense taken, really.

If you hang around here a while and buy a Heritage, you might get a little edgy as well.

After you buy a Heritage it is like a revelation and you feel a devotion to the guys that built your guitar. Then you wonder why others don't appreciate this "National treasure" we have in Kalamazoo. And then, and only then, will you be bitter about the mass produced, over marketed, Gibby guitars which are poor attempts to copy the originals..... which are still produced, by hand, at Heritage Guitar Company. :)

Not really; been considering it on and off over the last couple of years. You guys are helping to assure me and finalize the decision.. Thanks.
