High Flying Bird Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 Friday night I replaced Joe's 59s with a set of Schaller golden age pups in his H-150. We all agreed it was nice to finally hear the wood in that guitar for a change. Before the tone was too midrangey and muddy. Now it can sing. It is like it no longer has a sinus confection. Get this, if he tunes his amp a certain way they can sound just like the 59s.
tulk1 Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 It's not often you hear about SD's being replace with Schallers. Altho' I can attest that I like them in the guitars I've got. In fact, I think all three of my H's have Schallers of some sort.

Gitfiddler Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 Leave it to Ron to take a non-comformist direction...even with pickup choices. The Schallers that came in my H575 also sounded great. I replaced them with HRW's which also sound great, different, but still very nice p'ups. I'm saving the old Schallers for another project guitar...down the road because they are good ones. Sometimes pickups just work in a specific guitar, and others do not. I guess it goes to show that there is much more to a guitar's tone then one component.

So many intangibles..Including the players technique..(or in my case the lack thereof)...
t0aj15 Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 I did just the opposite, My 535 came with Schallers which I didn't like at all, they were very dark and muffled sounding so I had them changed to a matched set of SD 59's. WOW, what a HUGE improvment.

WOW, what a HUGE improvment. Funny to hear. I have 59's in my 535 and they sound great. I have Schallers in my 555 and they sound to bright. My guitar tech swaped them today against Seth Lovers. I'm very keen to hear the result hopefully tomorrow

Thank you for this little post, I have also had older heritages with plain shallers and thought they were just alright, now curiousity would drive me to try the very affordable Golden Age Pickup for a run around the block... That is how I found what I "REALLY" like about Bill Lawrence pickups!

I always thought the "golden age PuP's" were the same as the schallers on the Hertiage models? Apparently I've been mistaken..
Millennium Maestro Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 If those pickups they originally sold in my 85 h-170 up to my dis 90,s 140 and 150's were golden age... I would not buy golden age pickups, there was nothing identifying them as more than shaller's. I will dig up old pictures.

I think it's possible that Stew-mac's Golden Age pickups are the same as Schaller Golden 50s are the same as Heritage's standard humbucker.

I saw where Stewmac had some "hot" golden age pups and I was wondering if they may be HRWs. IT would be cool if they were at $45.00 each.
