Hfan
I have a 150 with an original nut (white plastic). The D string slot is cut too low with barely any clearance between the string and the 1st fret resulting in a buzz on the open D. I'm assuming my best option is having a new nut installed. Any recommendations? I was considering bone which I have on two of my other guitars. I've heard of graphite nuts as well but have no experience with them. Thanks in advance. Steiner
My dog has those. Thought it was the least I could do to maintain his dignity after that tragic office appointment at the vet where he thought he was going to get tutored.
Steiner
I should add that I've had nuts replaced with bone (on guitars) and own one with a brass nut - I believe those were the vogue some years back. Most of my guitars have wound 3rds and the non-plastic seem to be better / easier to tune.

Yeah I had a guitar with a brass nut, (There's a joke in there somewhere) It was OK..Just a bit too bright sounding for my taste..If I want a bright guitar, I will play a Tele.. Mikenov
I have bone nuts on a bunch of my guitars. I also have a tusq nut on my Taylor. That is one sweet sounding and tuning guitar. All the bone nuts work great too but were installed by a good tech. The Taylor came from the factory perfect (as usual) . Either Tusq or bone if installed correctly is going to improve your sustain a bit but more importantly should give you a guitar that stays in tune better. High Flying Bird
Thanks, Maybe when you need help or advise here or elsewhere, you will get a similiar response. Don't get your nickers in a wad. I knew that there were plenty of people here who knew better than I about which part you needed and that they would help you, which they did. If you can't have some fun here what is the use of posting? By the way I get plenty of abuse here and it is just part of the fun.

proxmax
anyone tried fossil mammoth bone for the nut?
tulk1
anyone tried fossil mammoth bone for the nut? Isn't that what TUSQ was originally supposed to emulate - i.e., a synthetic mammoth ivory? Haven't tried mammoth, but it sure intriques.
nat120
I had a question, if you are palm mutting a cord somewhere on the fretboard( and chuggin away) desite what nut you are using will it have any effect on the sound?
Hfan
Hi all, I've been of the site for a few months now, its been a crazy summer. Anyway, I wanted to say sorry for getting a little bent out of shape on one of my previous posts on this thread. For a little background...that day I was changing strings on my early 70's Tele when the original nut (plastic I believe) cracked in half for no apparant reason. later in the day I was playing my 150 (Sunsetburst, Bare Knuckles pickups) I bought used a few months previous, I thought I had finally gotten the kinks out of it (2 setups, one after shipping, the 2nd due to the guitar tech missing an adjustment or two and then what I think was a grounding issue which I resolved on my own) when I noticed the open D would die immediately when muted and buzz when picked open, never noticed it before. The D string was lower than the rest. I was having a hair pulling moment at the time, lost my sense of humor for a while...two bad nuts (no pun intended) in one day. Anyway, I had a bone nut installed on the 150, a local guitar builder carved the slots from a blank form. It is now all I had expected. Although since getting my 535, my 575 and 150 have been spending most of the time in their cases. Had the tele done at the same time with a plastic nut. I need to do some catching up here, missed a lot in the last few months. Regards, Pete
