Scooter Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 My grasshopperness would like to axe a question regarding 137s/137DCs. It seems to me (and it may be just that) after looking into 137s that in general the lighter ones seem to be more desirable to people. Now maybe that's just a mistaken notion on my part. But if it's so then why? Is it because lighter = easier on the back? Or is there a different sweet tone that the lighter ones can attain? Or all of the above? I'm in subjective territory again but I'd be curious to hear what you think anyway. Also, as I'm looking at the 137DCs in the recent topic that was brought up I got to thinking: Are the DCs going to be sought after because they are cool looking OR will they be more desirable because that extra hunk of wood isn't there on top to add weight to the guitar and, therefore, helps that guitar to better attain a specific tone people tend to look for (or, of course, both)? Or maybe I'm thinking too much. Thanks, guys.
gopeteygo Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 Generally if people want a lighter guitar it's simply to go easy on the ol' back. If you can handle the weight, I believe as a rule, the heavier the better tonewise. At least that's the way I understand it. Most people that purchase a 137 are going for the P90 tones IMO.
rjsanders Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 related topic (weight vs. tone) on TGP a recurrent theme. consensus seems to be there's no constant correlation. thus a heavy Les Paul (>10 lbs) may sound as desireable as a light one (8 lbs, though those are really rare). i've certainly played lighter guitars that were duds. generally i prefer 8 lbs or less, but my LP Custom is 9.5 or so and killer. my 137 is probably 7.5 or less abolutely slays - gets heavy or light sounds, always clear, can be warm or bright. DCs might be affected by removal of wood, it all depends on the piece of wood, so ya gotta play each one to find the right one - the reason i prefer dealers like Jay Wolfe or C.B. Perkins. i'm very curious how any 137DC will compare to my 137. guessing that a NAMM guitar would be a particularly good example of the type, i was real interested in comparing this year's red 137DC to my
