Another slow day at the office..What is your favorite distortion pedal? I use an old Ibanez TS-9 because its all I could afford..I sometimes use a MXR Dyna Comp to give it a bit more sustain..But generally just the Tube Screamer straight to the amp..I may want to upgrade someday when my income hopefully increases..So what do ya'll like? Discuss!!

I don't actually use distortion pedals. Mine are Clean Boosts and one modified OD. First on the board is a CMATMODS modified SD1 OD pedal. That goes into a Heavy Electronics Ascend pedal. Which then feeds a CMATMODS Clean Boost.

Had a TS808 but could never bond with it. Must be something since so many people use them.

Kenny also had a terrific Fulltone Fulldrive, too. But he let that go! Heh! My pedal board has it now! Thanks...again! Kenny. Great box!

I am not much into stomp boxes....i like to use the parameters of the amp to give me a diry/distorted sound. I like chorus, delay and fuzz....but i'm just not an advanced enough player to incorperate all those pedals into my playing. What the amp has on its face does the trick for me.

i do have a Boss TU-2 tuner stomp box though...very helpful!!!

Oh gosh I'm an overdrive pedal junky - though I've recently sold a bunch to fund some recent guitar and amp aquisitions. I became an overdrive junky years ago when I had my channel switching amp and still like the sound of my overdrive pedals - either puching the already driven amp or into the clean channel of the amp. I gots to thinking "why not just get an amp with a clean sound I like and use pedals for my overdrive sounds?" The rest is history.

First of the TS9 is a fine pedal. There's a reason there are so many TS clones out there - it's a great sounding pedal. I remember seeing the Hellacasters back in the mid '90s. Both John Jorgenson and Will Ray played their custom G&L, into the then new Tubescreamer RI into their Matchless amplifiers. The tone was fantastic. Some may not like the mid range hump, but I find it helps to cut through the mix without the bass getting farty/flubby/flatulent and without the highs getting harsh. Just some of my fave pedals:

BJF Mighty Blue - Custom one off two channel Baby Blue Overdrive. My desert island OD pedal. This is one of the most naturual sounding and amp like pedals I've owned. Sweet fat smooth lead tone and a great low gain fattening boost. Very dynamic - even wide open I can turn down and play soft and the pedal cleans up.

MJM Blues Devil - The best Tubescreamer I've tried.

Lovepedal Eternity - Great pedal thoughout the range, but I use mine wide open. It gives the wound strings a nice growl, the treble strings a nice bight, yet isn't harsh.

Barber Small Fry - I've owned this one for years and swapped it in when the switch on my eternity died - wow! Why didn't I have this plugged in before? The setting I'm using reminds very much of my old Boogie Mark I. Smooth and singing.

Maxon OD-820 - A sleeper of a pedal that doesn't get the press it deserves. Clean boost that is almost as transparent as the revered Klon Centaur, and and overdrive that just kills.

Barber Trifecta - A great fuzz that works well on a batery adapter.

Throbak Stone Bender - Possibly my favorite ToneBender clone. There's something about those germanium fuzzes...

Man I could go on and on and on and on...

Brother !!!

I have turned into a complete boost/od/distortion pedal gear head in the last year or so. I must have ten or twelve, my pedal board has ten pedals and only two are not boost/od/distortion related,(a chorus and a delay).

On the board ...

Nobels Preamp - just a simple volume bass and treble preamp but very useful

SD Pickup Booster - no frills booster

Zendrive 2 - awesome overdrive with onboard valve

Tim - another great od pedal

Xotic AC Plus - very flexible two channel clean boost / overdrive pedal

Mosferatu - a higher gain version of the Zendrive,

SD Tweakfuzz - multi voiced fuzz pedal

not on the board ....

SD Twin Tube Classic - very warm smooth natural all valve pedal, not on the board as there is a very nasty ground loop when used with the other pedals.

Vox Satchurator - some love it, I did at first but I haven't found the sweet spot with it yet.

Marshall Guvnor 2 - it sounds good on its own but doesn't play nice with the other pedals.

incoming ...

Barber Dirty Bomb - hopefully this will be my high gain '80s metal pedal

Fulltone Catalyst - three pedals in one - fuzz, overdrive, clean boost. Should be a lot of fun.

I've never had a TS, sold all of my pedals in the early '90s and went rackmount, multi fx, (wish I had kept them) so I'm doing catch up now. I don't use amp overdrive as I just can't play at the required volume. Cranked AC30 anyone ?

I like nothing better than to just pick up an acoustic guitar and play, or to plug a good electric straight into a valve amp but I also appreciate the tone that I can get from these wonderful little gizmos.

( well that's my story, and I'm stickin' to it ! )

LOL! You're worse than me! On my board right now are:

Guitar -> Teese Picture Wah -> BJF Mighty Blue Overdrive (used for fat boost, fat smooth leads and stacking) -> Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive (used for crunch rhythms) -> Menatone Blue Collar (used for smoother higher gain leads and some rhythm) -> Lovepedal Eternity (used for more aggressive high gain leads/rhytms) -> Barber Small Fry (used for a different flavor medium high gain) -> Fulltone ChoralFlange -> T-Rex Replica -> amp.

One of the ODs is gonna have to go to make room for my Red With Phaser. I was playing with that the other night and it's gotta go back on the board. I had the Mosferatu. I liked it, but found the sweet spot to be prety small. I also had the Zendrive, but didn't understand all the buzz about it. Nice yes, but great? Maybe I need to give it another try. Had both the Tim and Timmy - shouldn't have let go over either one, though neither one made it onto the board. I need to have my head examined! Just let go of a Dirty Bomb - just didn't float my boat. There's one of those Xotic pedals I want to try (I can't remember which). I heard it on a Mesa amp demo - the amp sounds ok, and then he kick in the Xotic pedal and the tone just kills! I think it might have been the AC - gotta go see if I can find that clip.

Right, Southpaw! This is where I am, just now...one of the biggest reasons I had the 30W El 34 built. I am fortunate in having some really nice guitars. Only thing I want on the floor for them to run through is the channel switching button and a tuner. More on the amp, on my amp thread, tomorrow. Just got it back today, from its second major re-work.... I think we're there!

I've got a TS9 that I picked up about 3 or 4 years ago, but I rarely use it. The Classic 30 and the DSL401 both have overdrive channels, and I tend to use those. Unfortunately the old group has had trouble getting together this past year, so mostly it's been me playing around a lot lately. I end up trying lots of different drive levels. The only pedal that has been in the chain recently has been the TurboTuner.

Have a Governor and little big muff but I never use them.

All my amps have verb and two have trem. I use an analog delay to thicken up the verb on the Goodsell and with the Swart when on the boost channel and output tubes saturated and the attenuator on. Use fellow forum member Jon's clean boost overdrive for better volume and tone control.

For the style's of music I want to play I would need no pedals. For the stuff I have to, and do play, I have to have some extra gain.

Pedals are a means to an end for me. I just dont want to buy a Mesa dual rec or some other high gain amp when all the tones I love come from my bf fender's, JTM 45 reissue and my Mesa LS.

My favourite stomp for now is the xotic BB preamp. Its a good ts type pedal with more tone control and gain.

A pedal that I really like is the tonebone trimode. In front of a fender it just feels like part of the amp. Makes a 1 ch amp become a versatile 3 ch amp.

Before anyone says "I just use my guitars volume and tone controls", believe me when I say, that wont get you from, "Brown Eyed Girl" to "Enter Sandman" B)

A Peavy 12w practice amp with spring reverb is my all time favorite stomp box.

Between tuition for myself and my fiancee, amplifier money was non-existent when I first started gigging regularly. I needed volume (right now!) and I needed that volume on the cheap. Stomp boxes weren't an option. Once I realized I could prime a mid-80's solid state Fender 60w 1x12 with a Peavy 12w 1x6(?), the volume problem was solved...in spades, mind you.

Also, you haven't lived until you've played double reverb springs. Life is good.

One problem solved, a second (obvious) problem presented itself. This was a rather hot combo, especially on my Starfield's single coils. But I needed the volume and didn't have any money to throw at the problem so I adapted my playing style to the rig and actually developed as a guitar player, stylistically and technically.

I was stuck with that rig for the better part of ten years and spent the entire time being angry with myself for not having a better amp rig. In retrospect, as a guitar player, I grew enormously on that rig and now that I have the money for the sort of rig I used to fantasize about...I'm stuck in a big city apartment building playing through headphones.

The grass is always greener :P

PS: as for actual stomp boxes, I have a Super Fuzz that I plan to retire on and an original ZOOM super-duper-mother-of-all-stomp-boxes that I'm still pissed about buying. I want my $150 back! Mostly I use a DoD blues with a Whammy I and a Whammy II in serial.

I had a TS-9 but it didn't really do it for me. Sounded good with my Strat but with nothing else. I recently got a Fulltone OCD and am really happy. It offers a nice "power tube crunch" distortion without coloring the voice of the amp. It just makes it sound cranked at any volume. The gain available ranges from clean boost to super saturation. I use it to just put an edge on things. Understand I'm mostly a "plug in and go" kind of guy. My DRRI is perfect form my style, offering really dynamic tone with lots o tube crunch when it's cranked up. The problem is that for home use it's pretty loud when it's cranked. The OCD offers me "the sound" at reasonable volume levels. Check out the Fulltone website for some sound clips. The LP + Deluxe Reverb clip is what got me interested.

I use a Lovepedal Eternity but only with my Ampeg V4. It's the king of cleans but sometimes I want to dirty it up some. It comes in real handy when using my looper. I don't use pedals with my JTM45 and 50w Plexi because they just sound so awesome without pedals. I had a tubescreamer and liked it but traded it for the lovepedal. I may buy another someday.
