slider313 Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 At Rob's request (yoslate) I'll make a short story long; My brother in law in NY was on the town road crew, filling potholes and plowing snow in the winter. He injures his shoulder and gets transfered to the sanitation yard where he directs incoming trucks and the public as to where to place metals,glass,plastic.etc. I ask him to keep his eyes open for tubes, tube caddies, old radio's and amps. He calls me about four times in a two month period with,"I have these tubes, are they any good?" All are not amp related. He say's he feels he's wasting my time and I tell him most tubes are not compatable with guitar amps but I appreciate him keeping on the lookout. Then he calls and say's he thinks he has something good. Now, he knows his rods, reels, crossbows, guns and such but knows nothing about musical equipment...........nothing. I ask what he's got and he say's, "It say's Fender;Fullerton,California. My heart starts racing and I ask,"Fender what?" He say's,"Fender Deluxe Fullerton,California". I say,"No way! What color is the cabinet?" It's like a yellowish gold he say's. Then I ask him to look in the back to see if it has a blue Jensen Special Design speaker. "Yeah!" he say's. I ask him to read me the numbers on it; P12R 220749. I can't believe what I hearing. He asks if I want it!!!!!!!!!!!! Hell yeah!!! Give it to my sister to send Fedex ground from her office. Well here it is...................................................................
slider313 Posted July 18, 2009 Author Posted July 18, 2009 If he (my brother-in-law) wasn't there to catch this jem, it would have been put into the crusher. It's makes me wonder how many good guitars and amps DID make the crusher.
yoslate Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 Thanks, Mike! I love this story! I love the pics; that amp's a beaut...and it came so close.....
Thundersteel Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 Good catch! I'm amazed these make it to the trash in the first place!
slider313 Posted July 18, 2009 Author Posted July 18, 2009 Good catch! I'm amazed these make it to the trash in the first place! I'm thinking most guitars don't and either wind up going to a young relative who plays or they are kept for sentimental reasons. Amps with tubes, on the other hand, are looked at as obsolete. I can imagine someone saying,"It has tubes in it. Nothing uses tubes anymore! Put it in the junk pile."
Kuz Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 I have been stomping around our dumps for months after I heard about Mike's find. All I caught was some strange Jungle Hepatitis B Disease! When you are in the right place at the right time..... WOW!

When you are in the right place at the right time..... WOW! Hey, I been doing that too. So far I've found a couple of mattresses that didn't look too bad. And what I'm pretty sure was an uneaten Baby Ruth bar.

And what I'm pretty sure was an uneaten Baby Ruth bar. Don't count out those mattresses. Last year, in the same sanitation yard, they found 12K in an old mattress. It hit the crusher and bills were flying out. They stopped the machine and jumped in and recovered the 12K.
