in my ENGL XXL 4x12" cab i replaced 2 of the Vintage 30 with Eminence Legend GB12.

they're mounted in X pattern.

man, that rocks!

the shrillness from the V30 is reduced, but still not dull.

trebles are singing - not crying!

great middy rocksound from the best hardrock aera.

bass is also not missing and tight :P i have to reduce it.

what combination did you guys test yet or still use?

cheers, klaus

I have a Bogner 4x12 with the original V30s that I play an XTC through. I enjoy the fact that you have to lean into it while playing -kind of like walking downtown Edinburgh or Chicago on a windy day :P

The 2x12 combo I take on the road has a combination of ceramic and AlNiCo Tone Tubbies that Is in it's own right pleasing. The SLO goes through a Soldano 4x12 that has the same Tone Tubby configuration with V30 in an X pattern. They all "go there"

There are other 2x12 cabs with combinations of Celestion golds, greenbacks &V30s (old & new) plus a Jensen AlNiCo hiding somewhere.

Currently, I'm very big on the Eminence stuff! Two of my little combos have 'em ( a Man-O-War and a Screaming Eagle), and the cab for my 30W EL-34 build is sporting a Wizard and a Red Fang. That pairing sounds very, very good!

I really like the 12" Weber Blue Dog and Silver Bell combo both AlNiCo 30W with Pre-Rola treatment in my AC30 build. They compliment eachother really nicely and fill out the EQ. Really killer speakers.

I use an oversized 2x12 (almost as big as a 4x12) cab with an Eminence Red Fang and a Weber G1230-55. Great combination.

I have 2 open back Avatar cabs. I'm pushing 2 EVM12Ls with a JTM45 clone and 2 Scumbacks, an H75 and an M75 are being driven by a Metroamp 50w plexi. Very happy with both of them.

To my mind, the starting point for the "ultimate rock sound" is a small over cooked single speaker combo. I love hearing other people play through heads and cabinets, but the way that I hear and play rock n' roll seems to be anchored in very small combos.

Try combining an Alnico and Ceramic speaker in your cabinet. Both have very distinct tones, yet combined, yield a tone that features the best of both worlds. Tone Tubby is offering this combination. However, you can use any brand speaker to achieve the same effect.

Yea, Yoslate is doing the same thing in his vintage Vibrolux. We a/b his with my '67 Vibrolux and his has a smidgem, dab, just a tad bit more high end. Mine might be so ever rounder with period correct ceramics. Both sounded great. It was a lot of fun to do that a/b side by side live!

Thumping 12's, a cascading preamp section all into a BIG power section on overload are the only way I hear it right.

Weird how that works, huh?

Diffrn't strokes!

4x Vintage 30's do me just fine.

Different strokes, but the Vintage 30s aren't mind. You really have to play loud to get those babies to sound good.

But to each his own.
