FredZepp
Just grabbed a H-157 Black Beauty... a '94 with Sheptone PAF Tribute Pickups /Coil Split and phase mods. This should be different from my 150"s and some new tone fun.
golferwave
Looks like the one that was on ebay. I know you'll love the Sheptone pickups. Give us a report after you get it in hand!
FredZepp
I did read good things about Sheptone pu's. I glad that you can recommend them.. I was trying for something Heritage that would be a change from the 150's that I have. The coil tap, etc wiring sealed the deal.
brentrocks
looks to be a nice one dude....hope its not a back breaker
FredZepp
You're right Brent... that was why I was trying for a 140 ... The WEIGHT is the only consideration that this one doesn't rate well in. 9.8 Lbs. Hey , someone at PSP II showed me this incredibly wide guitar strap that is supposed to be really comfortable, I may need to look into that. Or can I do something with helium balloons tied to it.......

pushover
I think remember seeing that one on the 'bay.. Good snag.. I'm sure you'll love it. Let us know how the sheptones work for you, I'm curious to hear what you think? There's always something cool about a black beauty.. A classy guitar for a classy guy.. Just remember to wear your tux
tulk1
Basic Black. Can't go wrong that way. Cool guitar.
FredZepp
I've been watching it... and kept getting distracted by the flame tops that Heritage is soooo good at(150's. 140's or that nice 157 on the bay). In the end , all of the 140's that I had looked at fell through ( would have been nice to have less weight in the next guitar ) and the flametops were the same as what I have already.... just different finishes. There IS something elegant about a Black Beauty, reminds me of my first LP copy many years ago. And the sheptones and wiring made it a little more logical........ a little... right? I am expecting good sounds from this piece of mahogany....
pegleg32
Hey Fred, I also was following that one (not bidding, just waching). Looks like you got it at a decent price.
FredZepp
It seemed reasonable for a 157 ..... it was less than the reserve and they reconsidered....
High Flying Bird
Hey, what's next? My money says a 535. Tonight I was setting around with 2 other Heritage owners. We all talked about our "next Heritage." I was fortunate enough to get to play my new 535 but also Joe's 550. That sucked.
Dick Seacup
Sweet looking guitar. I love the 157s, especially the black and tan version, but that is AWESOME!
FredZepp
Hey, what's next? My money says a 535.....[ You are right, HFB, that a 535 or 555 was a possibility also. Those have a great vintage look, and when Clapton played a 335 on his From the Cradle tour ,it looked like a fun blues machine. I still have hopes of finding a real bargain on a 140 someday also..... Major GAS since PSP II...... really....

pro-fusion
The WEIGHT is the only consideration that this one doesn't rate well in. 9.8 Lbs. Hey , someone at PSP II showed me this incredibly wide guitar strap that is supposed to be really comfortable Only 9.8 lbs? That's a lightweight. I use a wide, padded Planet Waves strap on my 10.5 lb H-157, and don't have any problems. Though after three or four hours wearing in my home studio, my back does get a little sore. 111518
There is something fundamental about a custom in black, blocks, and gold. Pickguard and hardware suggest Wolfish origins? Very righteous guitar ...congrats.
FredZepp
UPDATE: So the guitar arrived with a problem with the toggle switch. Actually it was packed quite well, but the case fits too tight around the switch and damaged it. I take it to the local shop and they replace the switch. It had been replaced before and they had not left enough wire to properly repair. So they got the wire and tried to repair it. But I show up and they have removed the pick-ups to get to the wiring, and the guy tells me he won't do anything in the pot cavity ,because it has a lot of intricate wiring that he doesn't want to touch without the schematic. So it's fixed to the point where everything works and sounds fantastic, except a couple of things don't seem to work right yet. Out of Phase sounds great. But the coil split and the series functions don't work as I'd expect them to. so .... more to be done by our another guitar guy soon. I wasn't charged for anything except the switch because the guy know it isn't 100% yet. They raved about the sound and offered to trade a gibby custom for it, no thanks. But it does work and it works very well. Matter of fact.... fantastic sounds from the Sheptone PAF tribute pickups. Just amazing depth and sweet sweet sound. This guitar was a great buy for this great PAF tone. 3D sound, ....like having an effect running to expand the sound. But still some work to get it to 100% on functions. BTW the back of the neck pu said 7.62 ohms. http://www.sheptone.com/hum.htm
pegleg32
Just a dumb question, is it normal to have capacitors in the control cavity?

FredZepp
Just a dumb question, is it normal to have capacitors in the control cavity? When I first opened it, I could see that this wasn't like my others, when the repair guy said he'd not touch this part, ...I agreed with that. 4 push -pull pots for coil split (bridge/neck) , out of phase, and both in series. I'm going to use their "guru" to get everything back to where it should be. I hate to part with it for more work though..... sounds good now... I couldn't say what the particulars are for this wiring scheme.
Thundersteel
Just a dumb question, is it normal to have capacitors in the control cavity? Yes--those are usually connected to the tone pots to bleed off the high frequencies.

FredZepp
4 push/pulls...isnt that the "jimmy page" setup? That may have been a factor, just a bit , in electing to pick this one up. I wanted something different from the 150's that I have.
