I'm not a leather kind of guy and I certainly don't like nylon. Consequently I raid the local survivalist shops for old cotton rifle straps. They're cheap, they don't try to twist, and they're soft around the neck... a bit short for Gibsons, but perfect for Strats and nearly there for Teles.

Any other strap ideas?

Plenty of non-leather options from Couch Guitar Straps:

This one's my fav and looks super pimp with my dark almond burst 535!

I've been using Onari L9P straps for my Heritages. Its a distressed leather with a suede backing. I had to go to a wide one for the 157 because of the weight, and it felt so good that I grabbed another for the 535 and my G&L Legacy. On my Asat, I've got a wide Levy leather strap.

I like the smell of leather...

I use those Levy's distressed military web-belt style straps. They're comfy & rugged.

I can recommend two different straps:

Leather: http://www.moodyleather.com/store/moodystore.html Expensive, but the finest, most comfortable strap I have tried. Comfortable for hours...

Neoprene: https://secure.sadowsky.com/store/?cPath=29 Cheap and very comfortable

Good Luck,

Bob

Wow! Wow! and Wow!

Thank you all for the wonderful advice. Outside of playing, I'm not very good at the finer points of guitar stuff. I had no idea that there was such a wide world of straps...or that they could cost that much--good God! I have a better appreciation for the guys in other groups that used to mention their new straps, I had no clue. I should've been a lot more complimentary. I feel like a royal ass.

So how does a $100 strap work? Are strap locks necessary? I've avoided leather straps becasue my experience with cheap leather straps suggests that the leather eventually deforms and the guitar eventually becomes subject to gravity. That's why I like cotton gun slings, you can shore them up with a ton of sewing machine stitches around the holes.

At $100 bucks a pop, I'm assuming these straps last a long time?

Thank you again for the wonderful responses. Again, you guys have opened my eyes in a big way. Thank you!

Jazzpunk,

I certainly agree that it is a handsome strap, and the price is flat out merciful, comparitively. I'm not a big bouncer up and downer on stage, but I do have a rather active left stomper. Has that thing streched out on you at all? Do you use strap locks for it?

Thanks again for your reply.
