CJTopes
I noticed that a lot of you use the Seth Lovers pick ups. Anyone have a problem with these pickups squealing at higher volumes. I was playing an outdoor show on Sunday. The amp was louder than I would have it at a club gig. When I turned up for a solo a I started getting that high pitched microphonic squeal. I know Seths are not potted, is this an inherent problem with these pups? Other than the squealing, I love the pups in my h150
TalismanRich
I think that is a consequence of any unpotted pickup. Any slightly loose coils can get into a nice sympathetic vibration that causes it to squeal.
FredZepp
I've run into this with any un-potted pick-up.... And like you I really like the sound of some of them.

Kuz
Any opinions on wax potting? Wax potting the pickup will REALLY decrease the overtones and give you the classic "sounds like a blanket is over the amp". I am having a similar problem with some Peter Florence Voodoo pickups. I got a hold of him once on the phone and he said it is OK to use wax to seal the cover, but he doesn't like the entire pickup potted. Unfortunately, now that he know I have a problem he won't return my calls!!!
GuitArtMan
This one always gets me. Has anyone really, truly, honestly done a before potting/after potting comparision with the same pickup, same guitar, same amp, same set up, same etc., etc., etc., and heard a difference? Are we saying that the coil vibrates in such a way as to produce "pleasing" harmonics and that potting it dampens this? Is it the change in the dialectric between air and parafin? Why are single coils almost always (always?) potted? Would my favorite strat piclkups sound even better if they weren't potted or would they just sound microphonic? FredZepp
Maybe there are different degrees of this issue... I noticed it at first , then just forgot about it and enjoyed the pick-up. I just remember to turn the volume down as I'm walking up to the amp. And of course it's pretty loud when this happens. .... I'm not very motivated to trying to overcome this on my guitars.
