Hi,

I was wondering which tuning machines (Grovers, Sperzel, Tonopros Kluson, locking or regular), bridge (tonepros nashville or ABR-1) and tailpiece (tonepros regular or light weight) I should select? Additionally has anyone experimented with titanium bridges? Sonically, how does a ABR-1 sound different from a Nashville?

Thanks,

Bob

I like the Sperzel Ivoroid turners (they have a smaller hole than the Grovers, ect so you need to order them direct from Heritage first if you want them) because they hold their tune well, are smooth and look great.

Bridge I would go with a locking tonepro nashville. I can't tell you how many times I get my action and intonation set only to be messed up when I take all the strings off to clean the fretboard...

I have tried an aluminum tailpiece and where the tone was a marginal difference at best, the lighter weight was AMAZING. You could definitely feel the guitar lighter.

I have Grovers on my 535. I like them a lot as tuning machines, those big ears get you quickly and precisely into tune. You really miss the dumbo Grovers when you switch over to a Sorta-caster with its dinky tuning pegs...huge difference, and a step down. My poor guitar has been heaving strings, if I understand things correctly, two sizes too large for the past ten years and I'm only now getting a bit of slop in the G tuner. Grovers are great hardware.

If I had it to do over again, I would go with locking tuners simply because I like them and however much I'm impressed with the standard Grovers, I feel a bit more confident with locking tuners. Reasonable gents can disagree about this.

Moving down the neck, my plastic nut has an appetite for chapstick...lots of chapstick. Name brand nut dressing don't work on the old girl. Fair enough, I've got my quirks too.

Regarding my bridge and tail piece. Stock stuff: Nashville roller and whatever tailpiece accompanies that bridge. My chrome work has been very susceptible to corrosion, I've got one huge and couple of smaller chrome worms on the tailpiece...eh, no big deal it's cosmetic. The guitar massacared strings until I wore the chrome off the rollers, which took less than a year.

I'm by no means a tone guyr, so I'll keep my remarks about the bridge and tailpiece short: they keep the guitar intonated, but I'd prefer a locking post. Yeah, I'm clumsy on string changes.
