HRW Pickups - back in the fold + Shameless Plug

OK - I replaced my Seymour Duncan jazz pickup (neck) and restored my 575 with the HRW. Gone is the twangy tone. I had to roll off my treble on the amp to the 9 o'clock position to cut it down.

No more. Since I replaced it, I have done a couple of gigs and one recording session with the big band. Everybody seems to think that I have a "new" guitar, judging from the improved sound. I

only wish the technique had improved as much as the sound quality has.

I think Jay Wolfe is right - there IS some mystery to RHWs and I, for one, am glad to have it back in there where it belongs. I also think I am done experimenting.

By the bye - shameless plug. if anybody needs a great guitar tech in the San Francisco area, I can point them to one: Larry Council at Bananas At Large in San Rafael. It is a 45 minute

schlep for me to go there and worth every minute and gallon of gas to do it. Allan Rosen runs a very player-friendly store, by the way. Such a difference from GC!!

First - cool that you got your 575 back in running order. I've got HRW's in one guitar and I am really impressed by those pickups. Whatever Ren is doing, he's doing it right, no doubt.

Second - never hurts to plug for someone you think can help, especially guitar-wise.

Third - interestingly enough, Alan Rosen just joined the HOC this week. How about that for timing?

+1 for HRW's in archtops!

Thanks for the info about Bananas At Large's tech. I'll add them to my list of local wizards.

Here are two of my current favorites:

Gary Brawer, San Francisco, 415-621-3904, www.brawer.com

Terry Hiatt, Redwood City, 650-632-1570

Just got done putting HRWs (I bought from Paul144) in my 150 GT. Funny, thing is Peter Florence decided to come through with the replacement pup he promised.

So anyhow... my 150 GT with the HRWs is so much more alive than before. Very clear & focused neck. A little grit in the bridge. Overall, a little brighter (not harsh, brighter in a good way) and tons of bloom with a tighter bass.

HRWs definitely get rid of any mud and not woofy.

Time will tel but the only fair balance argument I can come up with is slightly less bass and lower mids, but again that might be the guitar. I would rather have an "alive" guitar vs a "booming" guitar anyhow.

+1 for HRWs in a 535. I love the tone I brought home from Michigan. It is a hot but controllable pickup.

I suspect the banana man was clued into this site by our man 143. Welcome.
