brentrocks Posted February 5, 2008 Posted February 5, 2008 I'm thinking about buying one and i was wondering what they felt like, and how is the Kahler trem? does it hold tune? what was the neck prifile like? thanks in advance! ;D
Dick Seacup Posted February 5, 2008 Posted February 5, 2008 I think it might have been jacques who bought one, but I can't remember for sure. If you search, you might find it. Are you looking at the one on feePay? I thought it might be a little high.
brentrocks Posted February 5, 2008 Author Posted February 5, 2008 yeah i was thinking of that one....I'm trying to get a condition report from the seller. a friend of mine had one back in 98...he loved it...i figured i might give it a try? it looks to be very versatile tone-wise. As far as price, i'm not sure what they were new, but for a flame top strat style, american made, with a trem and coil tap...for $750, i think it might be fairly priced?
jacques Posted February 5, 2008 Posted February 5, 2008 I have a 162 and I had a 127 Both these have mahogany bodies, whereas the 127 has a glued in mahogany neck (I am quite sure about the neck wood but not 100%) and the 162 has a bolt on maple/maple fingerboard neck. 'Your' STAT has a tonally more interesting body with the mahogany/maple sandwich, but maybe it has a similar neck to the 127. Mine had a splendid rosewood fingerboard. The electronics of the 162, plus the Kahler are probably identical to the STAT, except for those tiny switches. I've had them on the 127, but they were confusing. I did produce wonderfull sound variations with them, but somehow could never remember the settings the next day. You will have great fun with a STAT, but you told me you were not a pedal man, so maybe you are not the wailing type of guitar person, like I am. If you use the humbucker (all pick ups are Schallers and so is the other hardware apart from the trem) along with the tremolo the guitar will start to sing. The Kahler is very strong and precise and you can buy many of its parts online via their resurrected web site. I sold my 127 because it did not deliver in louder (band) circumstances (unpleasant feedback). It was a very comfortable and 'technical' guitar i.m.o. and I loved it at home. Check http://boomp3.com/m/45da79d60902 to decide wether I know what I'm talking about. The 162 (with the same Schaller pick ups and Kahler trem as your STAT) is a great guitar both at home & abroad, so I kept it. I only have one simple recording of it, but you can clearly hear what I do with the tremolo: http://boomp3.com/m/3987f2e5f2aa I hope this helps a little. I don't think I could resist a STAT. They seem to me a more luxurious and more original guitar than my beloved 162. If you want to see pics of the 127 and the 162 to get an impression of 1988 Heritage craftmanship, check http://www.jacquesguitars.com
Dick Seacup Posted February 5, 2008 Posted February 5, 2008 I now have Strange Brew running through my head. Heh. Thanks for the clarification and samples, jacques! The STAT in question may well be worth all of the asking price (and maybe more), I really have no idea. Coming from a bottom-feeder like myself, "a little high" regarding price needs to be taken for what it's worth.

Some of those i have never seen! They must be very early production, that were discontinued after a couple years? Thanks for the input, it was very helpful!!! Nice collection!!!

Thundersteel Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 Our own personal Heritage junkie! Like a kid in an ice cream store - needs a bite of each one. Doe anyone here cruise the LP Forum? One guy owns 103 Les Pauls! I think brentrocks may be trying to break that record with Heritages if he keeps it up! Way to go, Brent!
Gitfiddler Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 It might be worth my while to fly out to Kalamazoo just to see Brent's Heritage collection!!
Thundersteel Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 i only have 1 and 1 on the way Don't worry--if you continue visiting this site, I'm sure you'll acquire more!
cod65 Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 i really like the Stat headstock, front and back.
brentrocks Posted February 6, 2008 Author Posted February 6, 2008 i really like the Stat headstock, front and back. i'm really looking forward to this one, i hope i like it
jacques Posted February 7, 2008 Posted February 7, 2008 Congrats, Brent! Don't forget to post many pictures when you have the STAT at home. If possible try and record something. I'm always curious what edverybody plays on these shiny Heritages of ours and as you can understand I am particularly curious since the pick ups configuration and the Kahler tremolo are the same as my 162.
brentrocks Posted February 8, 2008 Author Posted February 8, 2008 The stat has landed...it came today!!! It is pretty sweet...it is certainly different from the 140!!! The neck feels really good (flat c shape). There is almost no fret wear. The Kahler trem works really well and stays in tune really well too. The action was really high, but the truss rod needed a good cranking to flatten the neck out and adjusted the saddles. The pickups are ok, they are no Duncans, but they are ok. Overall it is in great shape for a 20 yr old guitar! (no broken headstock ;D) PICS: http://s3.photobucket.com/albums/y52/ebmmquilt/STAT/P1010006.jpg[/img] http://s3.photobucket.com/albums/y52/ebmmquilt/STAT/P1010007.jpg[/img] http://s3.photobucket.com/albums/y52/ebmmquilt/STAT/P1010008.jpg[/img] http://s3.photobucket.com/albums/y52/ebmmquilt/STAT/P1010015.jpg[/img] http://s3.photobucket.com/albums/y52/ebmmquilt/STAT/P1010018.jpg[/img] http://s3.photobucket.com/albums/y52/ebmmquilt/STAT/p1010011.jpg[/img]
Gitfiddler Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 Very Nice, Brent. Next project..........H-170!
brentrocks Posted February 8, 2008 Author Posted February 8, 2008 Very Nice, Brent. Next project..........H-170! thanks man! it is pretty cool! YES the 170!!!...that baby has the factory Duncan upgrade w/ the coil taps!!!!
jacques Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 That is a real beaut, Brent! Make sure to inspect the Kahler, especially the little holes where you stick the Allen wrenches in. Maybe yours has harder steel than mine, but I had to replace quite a few small parts and adjustment screws that didn't work. Like I wrote, many of them are still available, but not all, since this type (Spyder) has been discontinued. Also make sure you grease the locking device on the headstock (all the parts) to ensure the strings are kept under pressure. After playing my 162 for a while all of a sudden I couldn't keep it in tune. At Kahlers they have a list of things to check and one of them, the malfunctioning of the top lock, turned out to be the reason. Don't worry about those Schaller pick ups, they are excellent!
