Considering H-150CM

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I recently discovered your forum (1st post) and am hoping to purchase a Heritage H-150CM. I've never owned a guitar of this nature/style before and while I started out looking at LP's the Heritage has definitely caught my eye. I currently own a couple of Hamer Daytonas and a late model American Standard Strat - so all single coils, bolt on neck types.

I've found that locally we have a Heritage dealer (I live in a small town, so I'm a bit surprised) and I'm wondering what the costs of a new Heritage H-150 are. I'm having trouble finding MSRP and "street" prices.

The guitar I've found is an X serial number which places it (according to the Heritage website) as manufactured in 2007. Should I still consider the guitar "new?" It's been on the wall for more than 2 years. It's definitely not a three owner used/player guitar but I'm just trying to get an idea of fair pricing. I like the idea of buying locally and supporting a small business which will hopefully stand by their customers if I have a problem or need some service/support -etc. I just don't know what a realistic price is for a new/nos/nib H-150 is right now.

If discussion about pricing isn't allowed, I apologize up front and ask for the thread to be deleted.

Thanks,

Welcome to HOC Conorb,

Your questions are fair as far as I can tell... I guess my post can be deleted, too, if I've violated policy

I think the new prices for an H150CM range a bit depending details/features, how nice the top is, type of pickups, etc. I think $1950 is about the current street price, perhaps as low as $1800 or as high as $2150. I don't find many on-line Heritage dealers that post prices. The ones that do are posting MSRP that have little bearing on real street price....

If the "X" guitar is being sold as new by your dealer, then it is warrantied as new. Nonetheless, he should be clear to you that its a two year old guitar. Perhaps he'll be motivated to sell for less given that it's not getting any younger amd gets more "shop" wear with time/age.

Best of luck in your hunt. There are lots of used Heritage guitars that come up for sale and HOC members have a history of finding some pretty good bargains now and then....

Cheers,

conorb...there is a WEALTH of information on this forum. Dig around here for a bit. The excavation will be more than worth the trouble! 150's are marvelous instruments, each one with its own fingerprint. Get to know the possibilities before pulling the trigger. Figure out what you want, do some watchful waiting, and land what you're after. You'll be most glad you did!!!

Thanks for your comments. The guitar is currently listed at $1890.00 - which places it right within the prices you mentioned. I'm hoping for the motivated dealer idea as well - but if prices have risen like other manufacturers then they might just say it's a discount over getting a new one.

Conorb, I'd be curious to know what small town? :puke: Also, even tho' you are new to the HOC, you might check out our Market Place. There are some good bargains to be found there as well.

My town a basically a "small-college town" of right around 50,000 people - give or take. We have three music stores - one that does everything and is a Fender dealer a small Mom and Pop shop (the Heritage/G&L dealer) and another small acoustic guitar store that used to deal a lot more in electrics but has moved down market as times have changed. He used to be the Hamer and Larrivee dealer and I purchased my Hamer's from him 15 years or so ago. Wow, I can't believe I've had those that long. :glasses10:

I have checed out the various market places and it does seem as though I could get something a little less expensive but I'm not sure if the savings are really worth it in the long run. Even I need to get it worked on or tuned up or anything it's always nice to take it in to where it was purchased and have the people that *should know* what they're doing do the right thing. I tend to buy a guitar and keep it - witness my 15 year old Hamers - it's not that I would buy to plan on selling it I guess is what I'm saying.

I sold my Nagasawa track bike earlier this year and I never thought I was going to sell that. So never say never I guess.

Anyway, I've been checking out Heritage and I really like what I see - the small independent approach appeals to me - and I can't really play that well as I would notice one way or another anyway.

Thanks again for the warm welcome and comments.

I've been lurking for a few weeks on this forum and others. The 150 definitely meets my requirements and while I've only played one - the only one within a couple of hundred miles - I did like it.

Being a research "junkie" I have been scouring the various information that I can find concerning the 150/157 and various LP's - although I've been finding that understanding LP's could turn into a full-time job.

You're right though about taking my time - I've been patient up til now, some more time won't make it any worse.

welcome. keep in mind that the H150's all weigh a little differently, some up to 10.5lbs., avg. right around 10 id say. what pickups does it have? SD59s usually have 1 screw on each ring, Schallers have two. But, HRW's, the best Heritage offers, also have two screws. If they are HRWs there is usually a dot on the switch, but HRWs are not usually found on H150s except for custom orders. What is the hardware bridge/saddle? Heritage uses from a couple different vendors, either way easy to change out later if you want. If it has the warranty for that price, go for it. Or, as mentioned, just lurk a while and see what gets posted here, there is some great stuff.

what is the color? I am curious.

good luck.

This is kinda a tough one, since it's a small local dealer. In theory you want to support your small local dealer since they usually actually care about you the customer, especially when compared against the large chains that will sell you only brand name, no expertise, and little or no knowledge about what you want to buy.

That said what the dealer paid and and their asking price provides them some room to work with you. Given that it's new, but given it's not "really" new and actually 2 years old, I'd think you could probably walk out of there with the guitar for ~$1750 or so. Yeh, there are sometimes reasons they might sell it to you cheaper than that, but unless you never want to see them again don't try and push it too much. Definately push against the asking price, but allow them to make a profit. If you meet somwhere in the middle it's good for both of you, and they'll be happy to support you after the sale which is what you want. That's my 2 cents..

welcome to the HOC! I can vouch for the H-150. I own 5 right now and am a LP style guitar junkie. These Heritage guitars have a magic about them that is near impossible to find in any new guitar today. The closest I've come in my collection is a couple of old Gbrand LP's that were made in the Parsons street factory that Heritage now resides in. Good luck in your search. The guys here have given you the straight scoop on the pricing of new ones and I hope you find the one that is perfect for you. Keep us up to date and post some pics when you purchase.

good luck.

I have no idea what the pickups are or what bridge/saddle hardware it has - I didn't realize there were so many options. Honestly I don't worry about pickups too much. I've still got so much to learn about using my own hands that I don't see the instrument as the limiting factor. That being said I think sometimes though there is a sound I'm trying to get that I'm sure new/different/upgraded pickups would help with.

What should I look for regarding the various bridge/saddle combinations? Anything specific?

The color is basically tobacco - but I don't see that color on the Heritage website. Maybe 'amber' or burnt amber then. It seems darker than amber and more brown than burnt amber - so I guess I really don't know. It's not a burst color and it's not a solid. It's brown with cream binding and chrome hardware.

Thanks again to everyone for the great comments.

Hi,

I am new to the forum and read your post and wanted to reply.I own a H-150CM in burnt amber and it is beautiful. I would stongly urge you to contact Wolfe Guitars in Jupiter Florida. Their inventory and prices are amazing. They are one of the top Heritage dalers. You can find their info on the web and on Gbase. I dealt with Graham who is a great guy. They ship and the price for mine including shipping was about $1600. The have the best flame on their tops. You won't be sorry giving them a call.

G base will definately have Wolfes inventory and the can get anything you want if you don't see it. I actually got mine a year ago and 1/2 ago. I love it. It is pretty much the same guitar as you linked below. I love the burnt amber. Again let me know what you decide to get.I definately think you can do better than the price you mentioned or at least they can match it if you decide to buy locally. I have bought off the net several times and have not been disapointed.
