Dreaming of headstock bling...can it be done?

I've been thinking how cool it would be to add some bling to my 575's headstock. Something along these lines:

 

 

I know nothing about this process though. Can it be done once a guitar has been completed or does it have to be done when the neck is still a separate piece sans any finishing?

 

Tell me what ya' know about inlays!

I would imagine a skilled inlay artist could do it after the fact... might be pricey?

Thanks for the link. Looks like maybe it's something I should hold off and do on a custom order.

 

Sure would be cool though. The finish on the headstock is pretty basic so maybe it would be doable?

if you are good with a router and epoxy, go for it, if not talk to someone who does inlay. check out http://www.luthiersupply.com/ they have a how to section
