JeffB Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 Just asking what you think are the most rock, blues, metal, jazz etc defining amplifiers. Not so interested in the small hand made clones and copies, just the real deal's Bassman, JTM45, AC30, Twin...... You get the idea. Im going on an amp bender again. Sold off a few and am left with two. Regret. Beginning to understand the whole sellers remorse thing. More amps are more fun than more guitars.
smurph1 Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 Don't know if this is a genre defining amp, but my little 10w Gibsonette is pretty sweet..Nice chimey clean tone, and handles a tube screamer pretty well..Just don't turn it up too much..
gopeteygo Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 A strat and a JTM45 is pretty killer stuff. Also a Les Paul and a Plexi. Both are rock and roll iconic combinations IMO.

Thats what I meant, "Iconic" Whether you like it or hate it it is an undeniable voice in rock.

I had a list before I saw yours. You got them all but one; Soldano SLO 100
Dick Seacup Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 What is the iconic not-high-power, small combo (preferably 2x10) tube amp? If any.
tulk1 Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 What is the iconic not-high-power, small combo (preferably 2x10) tube amp? If any. Would that be the Fender Vibrolux?
GuitArtMan Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 Would that be the Fender Vibrolux? Yeppers!
Mikenov Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 How about the Mattamps and the Orange OR120? Some pretty Iconic people have rocked the Orange Jimmy Page Hendrix To name a few..
zookroo1 Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 Is there a Mesa that stands out as the best from their lineup?
GuitArtMan Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 How about the Mattamps and the Orange OR120? Some pretty Iconic people have rocked the Orange Jimmy Page Hendrix To name a few.. Hendrix and Page may have used Orange at some time, but both are know for using Marshall stacks. When I think Orange, I think Peter Green.
GuitArtMan Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 Is there a Mesa that stands out as the best from their lineup? Marbe the Super 60 (Mark I) - as that's the amp that put Mesa on the map.
111518 Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 Marbe the Super 60 (Mark I) - as that's the amp that put Mesa on the map. I'd agree that when the channel switching Mesa's hit the market, they changed everyone's expectations about how an amp should function. Fender Champ was a recording amp of choice, as well as a ubiquitous first amp/practice amp. Since Tully didn't specifiy guitar amps, I'd add the Ampeg B-15, as an iconic bass amp.
fxdx99 Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 GArt nailed it - nice list. I'd maybe just add a Supro to the list (one of Page's recording amp for Zep 1 and 2) and maybe another tweed like a '57 Deluxe. As Larry stated, the Champ as well - Derek/Dominos a tweed version and Wood w/Faces the early 60s blackface version.
wingnut1 Posted November 7, 2009 Posted November 7, 2009 Would that be the Fender Vibrolux? If it's a blackface then it would be a Vibrolux Reverb, if it's a brownface it would be a Vibroverb.
JeffB Posted November 7, 2009 Author Posted November 7, 2009 Nice list! I had a list before I saw yours. You got them all but one; Soldano SLO 100 Is there a Mesa that stands out as the best from their lineup? Mesa Dual Rec. Not everyones favorite but 14yrs of production speaks volumes about it. Mesa Mk2c+ = Metallica.
barrymclark Posted November 8, 2009 Posted November 8, 2009 For me, if I had the extra cash to sling around: Polytone MiniBrute (sounds just as awesome for guitar as it does string bass or electric upright bass too!) Roland JC120 (just as awesome with an Fender Jazz bass as it does with guitar!) I know they aren't terribly expensive, but, still, they are must haves for me.
yoslate Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 Would that be the Fender Vibrolux? Piling on, here! Have a pristine blackfaced '76 Vibrolux Reverb. One factory speaker, one Weber F10-150. Had it fired up yesterday for the first time in a while. Have a Big Show coming up on the 4th of December, and I was working on a Big Rig setup for a large room. Split the Vibrolux Reverb and The Note (my 2x12 30W EL-34) out of the pedal board, then seasoned to taste. Boy, oh boy!!! Then I just diddled the Vibrolux for a while...what a great voice that thing has!
Mikenov Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 I saw my buddies band on Saturday and he played a Mesa Dual Rec combo with a strat. They are smashing pumkins inspired but cleaner. He sounded great. His tone really cut through and it got nice and dirty when he wanted it to. I always thought the Mesa clean tone was wanting but not his. Pretty cool .

I had an early Dual Recto, #1000 to be exact, I got great cleans out of it. Better than my original Mark I.
mark555 Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 when I was 15 my first amp was an original AC30 top boost. Two years later I traded it in for a 100w plaxi glass. I wish I could have those amps today.
