Antique Sunburst Finish

Recommended Posts

I've suddenly got a hankrin' to see some Antique Sunburst Finishes. It's one I'm not all that familiar with. I've seen Kuz's beautiful 555 in ASB, but that is the only one that I actually knew it was ASB. Just wondering who else has this finish. Why not post a pic or two or three?

Nice guitars!! Altho', why is John's so much darker than all the other pictures? From the photos, that color isn't quite what I thought it was. According to the Heritage swatch, it's much darker than most of the guitars shown. Except for John's.

I know that in the case of my 150, it is really light reactive.

That is, that it reacts to light by becoming more transparent and more red.

When viewed in a dim room lighting , it appears darker and more brown, although..

I'm not sure as dark as John's.

I wonder if his becomes lighter and more red when in brighter lighting?

His pic seems pretty well illuminated...

Hmmm, starting to think it's got too much yellow and red for me. Was thinking of getting a new guitar with this finish. May have to rethink it. Thanks for posting all the pics. As if y'all didn't like the excuse. :D

Southpaw's and mine are what I think of when I see ASB. The others look much more like ALSB (Almond Sun burst). It's almost as if the others have been mislabeled ASB, when they should be ALSB.

Has happened before ... if I remember correctly a HOC member has (had ?) two guitars both labelled the same but actually two different colours, can't think who the member is though.

There is absolutely no red in mine whatsoever, in any light. The pictures I posted above are the closest to the guitars real colour, (photos taken indoors with natural light).

Here are a few taken indoors with natural and artificial light, (it was falling dark at the time).

.. and finally a few taken by Brent, ( maybe flash to one side ? )

It seems to look more yellow in the flash / artificial light shots, but has no red in any light.

I was surprised at DC Rons ASB , next to a ALSB and looking very similiar.... (nice guitars, BTW)

Mine shown is a '92 maybe they changed at some point.

In person mine definitely looks brown, pretty much a tobacco sunburst.

SouthPawGuy's first post is much darker than mine though...(man, he has a lot of nice axes...)

Mine does say ASB on the label also... The second pic shows it looking brown, next to a VSB.

The third pic is in bright sunlight..

I notice that the red seems to coming out on ones with a thick (not lam) flamed top under light...

maybe they absorb the stain or refract the light differently...?

Looks to me like the results of staining the wood is more art than science. I know in the small amount of woodworking I have done, the type of wood makes a huge difference, the grain makes some difference, how much the stain has "thickened" and/or settled while in the can. Lots of variables in the process. Part of what makes Heritage unique I would say.

Mine looks tobacco sunburst as well. I also agree maybe they changed the color. Mine is a 2006, so maybe the newer ASB are more tobacco sunburst than the older ASB.

My Prospect dates from 2001 .... and the VIP2 is a 1986 model.

Wouldn't that make the newer ASBs' redder ? B) B)

My 575 on the other hand is OSB, Old Style Burst, and is appropriately dark, with no red at all. :D

It's the lean towards red and the yellow interior that is getting me. Definitely some variance between the colors. Which I would expect, of course. Really depends on who's shooting it, I'd think. I could handle a browner finish, than a red finish. After all, it'll be a custom ordered guitar. So gotta get what I want. The problem is conveying to the 'zoo what I see in my mind. What I'd like is a finish somewhere between the Millie NFH OSB and my 535 ALSB. Which is what I thought the ASB would be.

There you go trying that "thinking" thing again.

I don't understand it either. My 555 looks exactly like the sample on the Heritage web site and again my 555 is a '06 or'07, so again maybe they changed the color of Antique Sun burst after '06-'07 to the color of what my guitar is.

I would describe my Antique sun burst 555 as a cross between "tiger eye" and "tobacco burst".

Hope it helps, maybe a call to Heritage is in order to clarify if they changed the color a couple years back.

I agree that ASB pops out as more orange to yellow under flash. Under natural light it looks more honey to brown.
