Crow Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 Hi guys, I got a bug in my amp. One day I plugged in and got a nasty buzz on certain notes. I pushed on the speaker and it appears to be dragging the voice coil. So new speaker. Still got buzz. Could you beleive that sound was made by a little bit of loose vinyl? Glued the covering back down and tightened up all the bolts. New speaker sounds good. After a while I am getting sour "scratch" noise on certian notes. So, the options are, Look for more loose covering, I have to remove the baffle board to do this. Put the original speaker back in, maybe it was fine. Buy another new speaker. Most likely all of the above. This is an old Ampeg B-15N, a bit of a neck bender to work in the cabinet. Its got a 15 inch speaker. Does anyone have any opinions on 15 inchers for guitar? The one thats in there now is the $60 one from "Fliptops" an Ampeg restoration site. I can't beleive I can't tell a cabinet rattle from a blown speaker, this is weird. {must be the speaker}
JeffB Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 Does it go away at different volumes or eq settings?
slider313 Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 Sometimes a microphonic preamp tube can cause a "sizzle" after you play certain notes.
lb61906 Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 Sounds like a tube problem. I had the same problem with my old Super Reverb. One new tube set her straight !
Crow Posted November 14, 2009 Author Posted November 14, 2009 Man I was just down there playing that thing and it barely cracked at all, sounds great. This is weird. Yes the sound would come with more volume and use of a fuzzbox. I swapped one tube around already. Maybe time to get some new tubes anyway, it takes those funny single triodes 6SL7's. Gotta love Ampeg!
