tulk1 Posted December 21, 2009 Posted December 21, 2009 Anyone taken the resistance readings on your stock Schallers? I did, yesterday. Was a bit surprised at what I found. These are out of the '99 Prospect. Forgot I had them in the 535 or would have taken those, as well. Neck: 3.9 Bridge: 7.5 Hmmm. Took readings on my HRW's, too. Neck: 7.6 Bridge: 8.9 In my weird braims I'm thinking the lower readings may be why some people don't like their stock Schallers. 3.9ohms would certainly put that firmly in the low wind category. Which may be, as well, why I happen to like them. Was even thinking of swapping out the HRW's in the NFH for stock Schallers. Just a thought at this moment. But a possibility.
barrymclark Posted December 21, 2009 Posted December 21, 2009 Having traded out pickups a couple of times for different types... I am finding myself really missing the Schallers that were in there. They had a great subtle tone to them.

I just read 7.5 and 8.0 on my Schallers. Should be able to get a lot of input, since it's easy to measure this when they're in a drawer....

Sounds like you read one in single coil tap mode
rjsanders Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 Sounds like you read one in single coil tap mode yeah, maybe? Lollar Imperial low-winds: Neck 7.0K, Bridge 7.9K
fxdx99 Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 Mark beat me to it - 3.9 has to be out of spec for a humbucker. Low 7s neck, ~8 bridge would be common for Schaller type output I'd think - mine were in this area, but has been too long since I swapped to remember exact readings. I swapped for Seths and gotta say I'm very happy w/them over stock.
FredZepp Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 neck 7.46 bridge 8.07 ( a set of Schallers that I have laying around waiting for a guitar to go into.... )
tulk1 Posted December 22, 2009 Author Posted December 22, 2009 Hmmmm. Bad battery in the meter? Old eyes? Just read 7.5 neck, 7.9 Bridge.
rjsanders Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 Hmmmm. Bad battery in the meter? Old eyes? Just read 7.5 neck, 7.9 Bridge. 3.9 vs 7.5? must be the holiday egg nog, sez i
GuitArtMan Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 I'd say something is amiss here if your neck pickup only reads 3.9 K.
cod65 Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 Having traded out pickups a couple of times for different types... I am finding myself really missing the Schallers that were in there. They had a great subtle tone to them. Welp, here we go! : the beginning of the Schaller renaissance and beatification! my question is: if you were able to unwind a coil a bit, and make it shorter- would that increase or decrease resistance? I'm thinking the HRW mod can only be one or the other: a shorter coil, or a longer one? found my own answer: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qi...19112147AA2yvYK so, I'd imagine part of the HRW magic is adding more coil. What say ye?
tulk1 Posted December 22, 2009 Author Posted December 22, 2009 After the Holidays when I see how mucho $$s I have left in me personal funds I think I'm going to get a set of Schallers to fit in the .... well, one of my other guitars that is not the Prospect. Actually, maybe just the bridge pickup. Then again, maybe I'll get a Seth Lover. Or maybe a Fralin Pure PAF or whatever it's called.

cod65 Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 Save a little dough, I have stock shallers out of a 157 in gold we can work a deal on.M.M. I think everyone here probably has a pair of Schallers in their drawer.

smurph1 Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 I think everyone here probably has a pair of Schallers in their drawer. My Schallers are still in my 140, but I gotta tell ya I may be switching to Tonepros tailpiece and bridge!!
Thundersteel Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 my question is: if you were able to unwind a coil a bit, and make it shorter- would that increase or decrease resistance? For a coil, there is the DC resistance (ohms), and the AC resistance (impedance). If the wire is made shorter, using the same diameter of wire, then the DC resistance decreases. However, if the coil diameter itself changes, then the impedance changes (IIRC). Then, kids, there is the Inductive Reactance (X sub L) of a coil, which changes with the frequency applied. But that is another story.
cod65 Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 My Schallers are still in my 140, but I gotta tell ya I may be switching to Tonepros tailpiece and bridge!! been there, done that - oh wait- I went with the roller for some odd reason..... got to fill the tank with GAS again.
rjsanders Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 My Schallers are still in my 140, but I gotta tell ya I may be switching to Tonepros tailpiece and bridge!! IIRC (this needs confirmation) it was Tonepros who made stud posts out of pot metal. they make good stuff, but look out for that. maybe that's changed by now...
tulk1 Posted December 22, 2009 Author Posted December 22, 2009 I've got TonePros on both the Millie NFH and the H535. Both seem very sturdy.
rjsanders Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 I've got TonePros on both the Millie NFH and the H535. Both seem very sturdy. found out by accident when i took one of my guitars in for a setup
smurph1 Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 Has it been everyones experience that the better coupling results in better tone? I don't hate the Schaller hardware, just beginning to think it might look and sound better with a tonepros or Nashville setup..Whatchyall say..
tulk1 Posted December 22, 2009 Author Posted December 22, 2009 I have the Schaller roller dealy (hehe) on the Prospect. And it suffers no loss of sustain or tone that I can hear. Or feel. And I think it looks kinda cool.
cod65 Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 I think its all snake oil, But I did get the locking unit. I just cant believe that my local shoppe wanted 65$ for a tonepros bridge by itself.
