chico Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 A friend and guitar mentor of mine just purchased that H575 that Dave's Guitar in LaCrosse was selling, got a great deal, he's most excited and hopefully will be joing our little group soon. It's his first Heritage, he's been to the plant with me a couple times over the years and knew about Heritage, but still kept buying those *G* guitars till he got fed up with them, finally decide to get his first Heritage...and.... he went home today at a break (he is a guitar teacher) between students to see if his guitar had arrived, only to find it as seen.. So far, no apparent damage internally but he's waiting till Christmas eve to open the package.. wish him the best! of course, Dave will stand by but hopefully there was no damage to the contents..we'll see.. stay tuned. posted in the interest of showing what CAN GO WRONG shipping, even under meticulous packing.
FredZepp Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 OMG... open it... how can you wait..? I wouldn't be able to sleep...
tulk1 Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 First mistake; Marking it Super Fragile. That's like sticking a "Kick Me" sign on someones ass. Hopefully it'll all turn out okay. And good that Dave knows and is willing to wait for Christmas.
TalismanRich Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 I can see the problem right away. He put SUPER FRAGILE on the side. If he had put INDESTRUCTIBLE on it, they would never have crushed the box. My son-in-law works for UPS. I'll have to show this thread to him (although he only lays out the loading patterns for the planes).
chico Posted December 23, 2009 Author Posted December 23, 2009 He bought it as a Christmas gift to himself (he's single, lives alone) and got the OK from Dave to wait till X-mas eve to open. (Dave's has 48hr return policy, so the clock starts ticking Christmas eve when he opens the damaged box, complete with a red bow wrapped around it, as pre-arranged) But now, to have to wait till Christmas EVE???? I'd be going crazy. Mark reports he has shined a flashlight inside the box and there doesn't appear to be anything cut into inside or otherwise amiss with the inner packing. And upon shaking the box didn't hear anything suspicious... I wouldn't be able to stand the wait!! stay tuned...

DeLorean Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 That is scary to look at, but I have seen boxes with worse damage and no damage to the instrument inside. I have also seen boxes that showed little to no sign of a problem with damaged instruments in them (shipping damage, not dishonest sender). I would have to call it "Christmas Eve Eve Eve" and open it now... I don't like "Schrodinger's cat" situations like this.

Open it up..NOW.. put your ribbon around it on Christmas Eve! BTW welcome and I appreciate your perspective.
FredZepp Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 And Yeah , it's probably fine... but a new 575 needs to feel the love....the caring ... the personal relationship .. it needs.. umm, never mind..

cod65 Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 Yeeesh. I just shipped off my Hofner jazz box to a guy across country. I dont need to see this! (good thing I insured for 1700$)
peterbright Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 Insuring it does not guarantee payment when they damage it.
gopeteygo Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 Assuming that's the neck area, it looks like it might be ok. Shouldn't that be marked Super cala fragalistic expialidocious? I think that may be the problem.
Thundersteel Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 That's what you get for writing in Italian! Remember the movie, "A Christmas Story?" The lamp came in a box marked F-R-A-G-I-L-E (pronounced "fra GIL ay")

The lamp came in a box marked F-R-A-G-I-L-E (pronounced "fra GIL ay") I Double-Dog dare you! At least the box is (mostly) rectangular. Round here we just refer to the boys in brown as the box-benders. If there's a corner, they'll round it off. I received a book with hi-lo tracks across the envelope; it must have burned them when they found they couldn't bend it.
brentrocks Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 i bet the guitar is ok....having that padding around the case prob saved it
slider313 Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 i bet the guitar is ok....having that padding around the case prob saved it It is in a hardshell case?!!!! Take plenty of digital pictures of each step of your packing job. If any carrier refuses to pay insured damages you can go to small claims court with your photos.
Tim Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 UPS Sucks!! If were to ever have a guitar shipped (and I don't think I would), I would pay the extra cash and ship FEDEX Insured. I've had too many bad experiences with both UPS and USPS...I hope everything is OK with the guitar...

They're all a crapshoot to a degree.
golferwave Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 That's some kind of damage to the box there Ray. Does this guy live near you? Hard to believe that could have happened in the short trip from LaCrosse to Madison. Anyway I hope the hardshell case did it's job and all is well with the guitar.

And good that Dave knows and is willing to wait for Christmas. No joke - gave Ace a target. It was proably marked "Adult Signature Only" as well. That's why Ace just left it on the door step. UPS drivers are the worst.
JeffB Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 Read many horror stories about shipping guitars in the US. Why is that? Whats wrong with the system that allows that to happen? Are some of the stories overstated? I never hear about it over here or in Europe so much. I personally send out lots of expensive fragile items and in the last 5 yrs have had not one bad news incident. I received one guitar once with a broken headstock but that was part of a shipment of about 60 and that could have happened anywhere between here and China. Im not stirring the pot, just curious as to how there seems to be so much rough handling and negligence by a service provider. Just seems whack.

He lives in Davenport, IA., downriver from LaCrosse as you know. I've got this dream that maybe someday you and my friend Mark can meet. You are both IA boys! hope you are feeling better, chico

You are both IA boys! hope you are feeling better, chico Davenport to LaCrosse is still just 190 miles. They must have tied the box to the back of the truck and drug it all the way down Highway 61. The driver probably ran full speed back to his vehicle after delivering the package. It would be a pleasure to meet Mark sometime. Since he's a Heritage owner now he should come to PSP. I'm planning on coming this year or next depending on when I retire. They're contemplating an early retirement incentive package so it may be soon. After I retire I'll be at PSP every year so long as it keeps happening. I do feel better now. The blood thinners must be doing the job as I can feel a little improvement each day. Thanks for asking and have a Merry Christmas!
ronalr Posted December 24, 2009 Posted December 24, 2009 OUCH!!! sorry to see that ...I will be watching to see how this turns out Chico...I almost bought that same guitar from Dave's about 2 months ago.....just couldn't push the button then....ended up getting a great price on a 2002 575 from a HOC member....let us know how his Xmas eve goes.
