sittinidol Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Hey everyone, I'm interested in getting a Heritage; just wondering if there are any years/eras that are considered best or worst? I'm specifically interested in the H157, there's a 94 located about 1.5 hours away that I want to buy, but it's a long way to drive if that's a bum year or something... Thanks guys, great forum BTW!

NO bad years. I have a good friend on here that is thinking of driving 4hrs (one way) to check out / possibly purchase a Heritage. I don't think 1.5hrs is that far to drive for a soul mate!
High Flying Bird Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Hey everyone, ........ but it's a long way to drive if that's a bum year or something... As long as it hasn't been abused it should be one of the best guitars you have ever seen.
FredZepp Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Hey, I've got a '94 H-157... It's the best year for 157's... well, really.. I've got older and newer ones also.... and they are all excellent guitars. Obviously , the condition will depend on the use and care that it received, but I don't mind them with some wear , also. No such thing as a bad year for Heritage in my mind... Get some pics and if it doesn't look abused... you will love it!!
Millennium Maestro Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Yeah there are good years and bad years for Heritages.... Good years , when I buy, buy and buy more.... Bad years when I cant buy and maybe have to sell!! The only thing with a 157 you may want to check first is the weight, some pussies cant handle a heavy one!! M.M.
hiro Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Dude, check it out! I had to drive an hour to see mine. And I wasn't too sure about getting it becaue of the price. So I had to go a few days later because it was good. And I'm really happy. Yeah at first I thought there was good year (tires) / bad year with Heritages from the Ed Roman site, but I and (Ed) was wrong. The only thing with a 157 you may want to check first is the weight, some pussies cant handle a heavy one!!M.M. So true. I'd gotten used to playing my Heritage. I was looking into a Tele, and on the Tele forums they complain about the ones made in Mexico / Baja are too heavy. I picked up a MIM Tele at Guitar Center, like I would my Heritage, and I nearly threw myself across the room. I body checked the guitar so the Tele was safe. But those Fenders are light! I like a solid, well made guitar, and Heritage delivers.
sittinidol Posted January 13, 2010 Author Posted January 13, 2010 Thanks guys, no problems regarding the weight, I have a '71 Les Paul recording that is the heaviest guitar I've ever picked up! I'm looking for a Heritage so I can put the Paul in 'semi-retirement' and maybe not gig it out too much. Thank you all again, Rick Hatch Sittin' Idol http://www.sittinidol.com

Ray Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Hello FredZepp, your H157 looks great. Are the pickups HRWs - if they are, could you tell me what you think of them? I am thinking of ordering an H157, 575 or Golden Eagle, but I am not sure about which pickups to go for. I have heard good things about HRW. What do you think Kuz, Brent and all you knowledgeable guys out there? I know that this is a subjective question but I wanted to know what some of you think. Thank you.

Thanks, Those are aftermarket Sheptone PAF Tribute pu's. Which are excellent for an original PAF sound.!! The HRW's are a modified Schaller pu and a lot of people love them. ( BTW both schaller or HRW pickups will have 2 screws on each side of the pu, instead of the usual 1) Anything you pick is going to be quite a change from that LP...

Hey Ray, loved the rock and roll. Nice job. I suspect the 157 will fit your style much better than the other two which are basically designed to be jazz guitars. The 157 will be similar to your Les Paul since they are built in the same factory, on a lot of the same equipment, and by the same foks who built those old Gibsons.
FredZepp Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Thank you, FredZepp. Very helpful info. I didn't notice in the pics... are you using the low impedance LP pu's with the special cord?
sittinidol Posted January 13, 2010 Author Posted January 13, 2010 I didn't notice in the pics... are you using the low impedance LP pu's with the special cord? Hi Fred, I think you may be confusing me and Ray...I'm the one with the LP Recording. Yes, it has Low impedance stacked humbuckers, but mine has a built-in impedance switch so it's similar output to a regular guitar, although a little lower than average. Not a problem when you're running it through a Boogie though. The LPR has tons of character, huge versatility and awesome clean sounds too. You have to be careful with the jack plate though, it's mounted on the plastic control plate and it's easy to crack if you step on yer cord! I learned years ago to use 90degree plugs and wrap it around the strap.
Millennium Maestro Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Dude.... SittinIdol hows life treating you back home in the big C.? Im from lethbridge, lot of old stories from calgary here!!! we recently had another guy from calgary that bought a 140 at one of the music stores there... drop me a line, post some pics Still got the livewire, Frankie and Johnnys, FRENCH MAID LOL,.... ROCK ON BRO

I've always suspected that a LP Recording would be a sweet axe. Thanks for the pic...
FredZepp Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Thank you, FredZepp. Very helpful info. Hey Ray, on the new 150/157's , you will find Duncan '59's used a lot. I like those a lot for being versatile , but resistant to feedback- potted pu's. You will find much discussion on pickups here. If you feel like looking at some old posts, do a search here... on HRW or Duncan , Thobak, ( I think I am the only one with the Sheptones, but i would endorse them for an open PAF sound, but not potted ... to be vintage correct ) And yes, I was confusing you with sittinidol with the LP recording.. My speed reading isn't what it used to be...
Ray Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 And yes, I was confusing you with sittinidol with the LP recording.. My speed reading isn't what it used to be... No problem FredZepp.
tileman Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 BAD YEARS = when Heritage didn't exist GOOD YEARS = When they did!!!
Hfan Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 BAD YEARS = when Heritage didn't exist GOOD YEARS = When they did!!! Like the guys say, no bad years. From what I can tell their process has been pretty consistant over the years. Ihad a LP Recording Model in the 70's...pretty nice, got it in a trade for my 60 LP SG. Wish I could have that one back.
big bob Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 when I was 21 I had a very good Beer, I had a very good beer when I was 21!

Hi there, I'm more of an acoustic archtop guy but I have played several Heritages with HRW pickups that all sounded great. Whatever Mr Wall does to those pickups seems to work nicely. However, I hasten to add that the stock Schallers are fine with me too. I do not play that loud so that could be the reason I'm easily satisfied. Cheers.
sittinidol Posted January 17, 2010 Author Posted January 17, 2010 Thanks guys, unfortunately I missed out and the guitar I was looking at was sold before I had a chance to grab it; it was a H-157 Black beaty and sold for $850 cdn... Dammit!!1
