slider313 Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 I've been using Weber for my Jensen recones for a few years now and with the passing of Ted last year I was a bit concerned that the "quality control" may slip a bit. Well, it's just as good as it ever was. I sent them a '63 Jensen C12N a few weeks ago and just got it back. The job on this Jensen is top notch and it sounds and looks great. The cones they use are very similar to the original Chicago Jensen company and I like the way they sound even more than the originals. I also sent them a JBL D131F to recone. I know they use their own kit and some say a JBL never sounds the same if a JBL kit isn't used. I do have a reconed JBL K120 in my Deluxe Reverb and it sounds killer. It was reconed when I bought it so I'm not sure if it's an aftermarket or JBl kit. I guess I'll find out in a couple of weeks how Weber measures up with their JBL recones. Anyone with an old Jensen in need of a recone should consider Weber. They also demag and remag your magnet, which most reconers don't offer. One of my favorite things about them is they will also "break in" a speaker for you so it will sound good right out of the box.
tbonesullivan Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 Weber makes some great stuff. I have their bias probe. Haven't tried out their speakers, but everyone says they are great. I remember when Ted passed. Everyone over at the Carvin museum forums was talking about all the great stuff they had gotten from his company. I still have to get a mass attenuator from there. I have the bias probe from there, and it is just incredible. makes rebiasing my amps a snap, and I don't have to risk frying my amp or myself in the process.
DC Ron Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 Don't know about their recones or gear, but I ordered a speaker from them in Dec with a "3-4 week" delivery time and found it on my doorstep 10 days later. Great speaker, nothing bad to say about the current folks. Almost forgot...asked a question before ordering off their website and got a very knowledgable answer back from a tech within 24 hours. Can't ask for more...think Ted established some values that will last at least a while.
212Mavguy Posted January 19, 2010 Posted January 19, 2010 I don't have any speakers of theirs yet...but I do have a MASS attenuator, and it has some serious "Wow!" factor in a good way.
slider313 Posted January 28, 2010 Author Posted January 28, 2010 Well, I recieved my JBL D131F back from Weber yesterday and gave it a test run in my '65 Ampeg Reverberocket. It sounds like a good JBL should! Nice clear bass, thick pronounced mids and clear highs without any brittleness or bite. Kudo's to the guy's at Weber!
tulk1 Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 TA is running the company. Which he was sorta doing for some time, anyway. I think he is just as passionate about speakers as his Dad was. A real family company that will continue to thrive. Got two amps, speakers, blockers and other assorted sundries from them. Always friendly. Always a good experience.
slider313 Posted January 30, 2010 Author Posted January 30, 2010 Here's a shot of the JBL. They used their Neo Mag cone and voice coil. The JBL magnet and frame make this about a 22 lb speaker. If their Neo Mag sounds like this with a lighter magnet it's a win, win.
