number1armadillo Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 Hi Guy's, I have a 1991 Prospect Custom, that came with the Schaller Pickups. I'd like to make a change (neck is muddy on the bass side) So I was hoping for some sugestions from you. I primarily play Country, Classic Rock, some Blues. I play Rhythm Guitar in the band. I play Clean through a Fender Twin Reverb. If I want overdrive I get it from a pedal. I have played the Duncan 59's in the 535 and basicly like the sound. I called Seymour Duncan and the say try the Alnico Pro. I have played Lace Hemi Humbuckers in the Gretsch Super Axe and liked it in that guitar. I assume Heritage has tested many pickups in their guitars and would pick the best/most popular. (by the way I played the HRW in a 535 and it was too thin for my style) Also as a side point: any suggestions on pickup height? these Shallers were extremely close and the 535 w/ SD 59's was too. The 535 w/ HRW not near as close yet all were factory setups. Thanks for your input. Jon
tulk1 Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 I have a '99 Prospect with the lowly stock Schallers. Love them. And I do country, classic rock and blues, much the same music that you're doing. Have you tried adjusting the pickup height? Could make all the difference in the world. The Schallers get dissed quite a bit, but honestly, they are very good pickups and should be able to handle all the music styles you've mentioned pickups. Then again, if you just want to swap out, Jason Lollar suggested his Imperial winds for a smaller semi when I talked to him.
slider313 Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 The pickup height is very important. Some pickups have alnico II magnets and can be brought closer to the strings. Others have stronger alnico V's and need to be set lower. Use you ear and adjust the pickups a bit lower. There are many boutique pickups being handwound at reasonable prices. http://www.manliusguitar.com http://www.smitspickups.com http://www.tomshorthandmadepickups.com
BrianToth Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 I put a pair of Fralin P-92's in my Prospect and loved the clarity they gave my bass strings so much that I put another one in my Sweet 16.

Spectrum13 Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 Or you could!!! Just wanted to show off the ABR-1 with steel posts screwed into body. Also wanted to change out the chrome for gold with OSB finish.
rooster Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 I've never played better than Bill Lawrence from Bill and Becky in California. I have them in all 3 of my Heritage H150s, and in my Warmoth Strat. L-500C in the neck and L-500L in the bridge, and on my Goldtop I use their old L-495s (which are now, I believe L-609s -- although they may be L-610s; you should ask Becky to be sure -- they are their P-90 style noiseless pups). rooster.

Rooster, I'm playing my strat with Bill & Becky's 280's and read this post. I put an L609 and L610 on a PRS I had. Great pickups at a great price. Is your gold top the one posted on their site with the cream colored single coils? Shure would like to see a photo of that.
