Thundersteel Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 what's wrong with PGs? Because PGs, more often than not, cover up some gorgeous wood. Now, if the PG is wood as well, then it's not bad. I'm talking about those big, ugly, hunks of plastic!
tbonesullivan Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 Because PGs, more often than not, cover up some gorgeous wood. Now, if the PG is wood as well, then it's not bad. I'm talking about those big, ugly, hunks of plastic! well.. to each their own. I just think that Les Paul style guitars look better with the pickguard. Without it, feels like a car with no doorhandles. Kinda cool.. but also weird. Of course, if it never had a PG, I wouldn't add one, but again, I don't like the holes, and if it's got a flamey maple PG, I say stick it on. Currently trying to see what it would run me to have a wood PG made for my H150CM. Anyone have any experience with that?
zookroo1 Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 Can't wait to see the pics! It sounds like an excellent deal. Good things do come to those who wait!
yoslate Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 Said it before, and I'll say it again: Fred, that's one of the very finest looking 150's I've seen...ever! Every photo of it you've posted seems just to glow! One of the criteria I'd set for The Grail was that it had to look as good as that one of yours!
dhouse Posted February 5, 2010 Author Posted February 5, 2010 Okay, here's some pics. Pardon the crappy iPhone photos, but they're a little more true than the pics I took with a nicer camera and flash. I'll try to take some in the next day or two using natural light. She's a beaut. Also, took the control plate off an solved the mystery. It's a h-150cm classic, not a deluxe. Someone wrote the wrong thing on the hang tag. Thanks again for all your help, guys. This thing rocks. More pics in following posts.
FredZepp Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 AWESOME !!! You must be very happy... I would have bought that one in a heartbeat. Very very nice. The Classic tells us it has S Duncan pu's . '59's I would guess. On the label it would have an indication of the finish.. ASB? or OSB... I can't decide. Great Find...
dhouse Posted February 5, 2010 Author Posted February 5, 2010 Thanks, Fred. I'm blown away by this thing. The attention to detail is amazing. A pic of the label and the control cavity (blurry) are below. It's "Alm. S. B.," which I assume is the same as "ASB." The caps seem to be of pretty good quality. Any thoughts on the pots? are they 300K? 500K? Decent quality?

Actually it is Almond Sunburst (ALSB), slightly different from my antique sunburst (asb). My classic sounds so fine that my ears tell me all is well with the components. But others might have differing opinions. See how it sounds , also notice if the pickups need adjustments to fine tune the sound ... to your liking.
ronalr Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 That is a real beauty dhouse...congratulations...I think you got a great deal!!!....classy looking top...enjoy

Nice Axe!!! And a great bargain. I have a question regarding the label on the back of the control cavity cover. Does every Heritage have these? Mine is from 1993 and it doesn't have the label. Guido
tulk1 Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 dhouse: Nice going there! What a way to get into the fold. I think you got a steal on that baby. Enjoy it. Guido: All of the guitars are supposed to have a label of some sort. As we have found out, not all do. My '99 Prospect does not have a label. My Millie NFH has two labels? And your '93 doesn't have a label. And to add to that, sometimes they're wrong. Just part of the mystique that is Heritage Guitars. IMO.
slider313 Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 Great score. I like the darkburst. If you get a chance, take a couple of pics outside in natural light.
tbonesullivan Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 is the wood pickguard the same color as the guitar, or is it black? Anyway, I say stick it on. It'll look classy. The top is nice but not incredible, and I don't think you'd really be taking anything away from the guitar.
dhouse Posted February 5, 2010 Author Posted February 5, 2010 Thanks, all, for the kind words and the warm welcomes. I'm very happy with the guitar. Tbone: The pickguard is actually plastic, cream-colored like the binding. The problem is, it's a different shade of cream than the pickup rings and the binding, due to the fact that it has been off for so long I suppose. Generally, I like pickguards, but I'm on the fence about this one, given the color differentiation. And I'm with you -- I like the top, but it's not the best that was ever produced. It has some nice figuring but it's not book-matched. As far as I'm concerned, though, that just adds to the guitar's character. I'm pleased as punch. And by the way, the most important thing -- the tone -- is incredible. I finally plugged into my Deluxe Reverb last night after putting on some new strings (.10s -- it came from the store with .09's!) and fiddling with the intonation, and man ... let's just say I didn't get much sleep.

If the pickguard is the Gibby triangle shape, it is not original is why it doesn't match. I'm not a fan of Heritage shaped pickguards on 150's, unless wood...which is pretty cool. You will find differing opinions on this. The Tone... well that was expected. The best. And some fine adjustments make it ready to go...
smurph1 Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 Dhouse~ Sounds like you scored a good one! Without pulling the p'ups, I'd bet your 'DLX' has upgraded Seymour Duncan pickups rather than the standard issue Schallers or the further upgraded HRW's. Other possible 'DLX' possibilities...Is your headstock bound or plain black? Is the word Heritage in grey paint or pearl inlay? We're all flyin' blind here, but glad you found a great guitar. Congratulations! Yes..congratulations!! It won't be your last...
dhouse Posted February 5, 2010 Author Posted February 5, 2010 Nope, it's the Heritage-shaped pickguard. I'll live with it a while and see where I end up.
FredZepp Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 Nope, it's the Heritage-shaped pickguard. I'll live with it a while and see where I end up. Actually, I am remembering tbone's sunsetburst at the beginning of this thread... that one looks fantastic with the Heritage pickguard... ( I just had to change my earlier statement a bit..)
tbonesullivan Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 Wolfe guitars has a blue H150CM up with a "custom pickguard" that is white pearloid, but gibson shaped. My 150 has the plastic one, and the problem is probably that the maker of the plastic rings is different than the people who made the pickguard, so it'll never match completely. I like how it looks though. Now I just need to keep myself away from that blue H150CM down at wolfe guitars.
