Gitfiddler Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 Some of the recent posts about amps were very informative (and GAS inducing!) I found this link from Sweetwater Music with a ton of amp information. Hopefully you will find this interesting reading. Amp Buyers Guide
tbonesullivan Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 sweet! that's a good read! I wish more people would realize they do NOT NEED A HALF STACK.
kbp810 Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 sweet! that's a good read! I wish more people would realize they do NOT NEED A HALF STACK. Yeah, one of my friends has a Marshall half stack so loud he can't even actually turn it on (and I'm not entirely sure if he ever has)... I guess thats the problem, I keep telling him he doesn't need it - but it's almost as if he can't even hear me!
Kuz Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 sweet! that's a good read! I wish more people would realize they do NOT NEED A HALF STACK. You DON"T? All my amps are combos except my Bogner Shiva head and oversized 2X12 cabinet. The Shiva has master volume that works GREAT and I can play even softer than my combos if I want to, with exceptional tone. But where is the fun in that??!!!!
pushover Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 It's also worth taking a look at the following item on amp myths. It's a little dated but still pretty accurate. Given the quality of people who frequent this site, I'm pretty sure most people know this stuff, but its a fun read anyway. http://www.guitarnuts.com/amps/myths.php
tbonesullivan Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 unfortunately amp makers seem to market to the "you need a 100 watt half stack" crowd. Nothing like playing a small club that fits less than 50 ppl and seeing people wheeling in the stacks. like WTF?

Where were you when I first began laying out money for the 100+watt amps? Having personally violated (or fallen for) the first 3 myths, I can attest to the author's reliability in those matters. I cannot concur with his conclusions in #6. I have never met an attenuator that I liked. Good read; thank you!
MacDoggie Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 sweet! that's a good read! I wish more people would realize they do NOT NEED A HALF STACK. Want to make a good impression when moving into a new house? Move in 2 full stacks and a set of drums. My cousin had a bunch of equipment his kids and their friends left behind when they moved out and he was just storing it, but when the neighbors saw the equipment moving into his basement, I think they ran inside to call some realtors. The topic came up a few months later at a bar-b-que. He got quite a chuckle out of it...

It's nice to see logical thoughts presented in a coherent and to the point fashion.
JeffB Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 If youve ever played with a drummer who aims 2ft below the floor boards before he hits the snare a lot of the facts laid out in "Amplifier Myths, Fantasies, and Facts" become myths.. . Particularly if your fold back isnt much to rave about. Some people just love preamp gain, others prefer power amp and speaker break up. My 100w amp sounds better than most 5watt amps at lower volumes. (midnight at home volumes)
smurph1 Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 Our former rhythm player went from a nice sounding marshall combo to a Stack, and I swear he was afraid of it..He never turned it up, couldn't hear it at all..never had any problem hearing his combo..It was wierd.. But I'm just the bass player..
