A word Philtone Guitars

Before Christmas I picked up an H157-C for a grand. It had hung in the music store for 5 years and they wanted to get rid of it. There was a problem with fret buzz. I sent it to Phil Jacoby of Philtone Guitars in Baltimore to be plek'ed. Turns out the 16th fret was very low, too low to be able to file down everything else. So not only did he plek the fretboard, he also replaced the 16th fret. While he was at it, I asked him to cut a new bone nut and to replace the standard bridge and tailpiece with

Tonepros units.

Phil's work is nothing short of amazing. This is, bar none, the best playing guitar I've ever owned. I will never part with it. Ever.

I know how you feel. My 24 year old H140 CM is with me for good. It'll be put in the Pyramid with me when I'm gone, along with my cell phone.Well,I don't want to loose touch,do I ?

I just cannot say enough about this guitar. Before this my primary was an Epi Elitist LP. A very nice guitar by any measure. Really, very nice. But it just doesn't measure up to the 157. The epi's response is very even and very polite. But also kind of generic. It just doesn't have gorgeous top-end that the 157 does, nor does it possess the same mid-range snarl that the 157 has in spades when it's cranked. And as for playability... There's just no comparison. (To be fair, the epi's never been plek'd either). But I just spent a straight 45 minutes playing, something that I haven't done in a long, long time. And the only reason I'm stopping is because I've got work to do.

I thought the epi was the sh*t when I bought it. And up to that point, it was the nicest guitar I'd ever owned. It's still a very nice guitar. But it just doesn't ignite my passion the way the 157 does.

*Sigh* I'd forgotten what it's like to be in love.
