Cold Weather, Finish Cracking, And an Impatient Wait

So, I just bought a 575 from Jazzpunk here on the forum. Today is The Big Day! She should be arriving . . . well . . . sometime between 8am and 7pm. And you thought the cable guy was bad! I know, I know . . . it's only been a week. Nine days to be exact. Well, 8 days and 10hrs to be more exact. And some guys wait months. But I've already waited 10 years! So, when that box shows up, I want to rip it open, pop those latches and inhale that sexy wood aroma while I run my fingers all over her curves. Hey! Get a grip, dude! :worthless: Um . . . ahem . . . excuse me . . .

Anyway, Jazzpunk was kind enough to let me in on the little secret about temperature extremes and nitrocellulose finishes, which I had no clue about. I'm always careful about temperature extremes with my other guitars, but because of the wood. So, the biggest question in my mind today (aside from those myriad questions we all have about the nature and origin of dark matter in the universe) is just how long to I have to leave my honey sitting in the case inside the box inside the other box. Here in Virginia, the temperature when I woke up was about 40, and the high today is 63. My thermostat is set at 67. Thanks for any advice you might offer!

You got that baby?? Beautiful guitar. You will like that one, no doubt.

Cold weather. Good rule of thumb is to allow the case to come up to room temperature, slowly. Which is probably what JP told you. Generally you want to feel the shipping box. Is it cold to the touch? Or just cool? If just cool (40 isn't bad), take the case out of the box. Is the case cool or cold? If cold, let it set until cool. If cool, you can peek inside probably without damage. But, to be certain, I always let the case come up to room temp. You can open the case and let the top sit on one of the latches, giving it a crack to let warmer air in.

Personally, I don't think 40 is going to hurt the finish, but that is my opinion. JP might have a differing opine. Most often we're worried about freezing temps.

First and foremost: Happy New Guitar Day!!!

The choice of the 575 is an excellent one for Jazz to Rock and an enjoyable too.

Nitrocellulose cracks occur because of the different rates of thermal and humidity contraction/expansion between the wood and finish. If you think about it, most winter homes are about 70F and most humans are right around 100F. I've never cracked a guitar just by picking it up and holding it against me. Based on that, I never worry about 30 degree difference.

The case is a superb environmental insulator for both heat and humidity. You're talking, worst case, 30f between the cold soak last night and your house. I'd say you're safe to pull it out of the case right after signing for it - BUT - to be conservatively sure, take the case out of the shipping box and leave it standing up, out of the sun and away from any heat source. After about an hour, lay the case down, pop the latches and leave it about another hour with the case cracked about an inch (this lets the humidity reach equilibrium). If you see dew form on the guitar or case, give it more time to reach your environment. Then, THEN (and this is the most important, crucial aspect!) enjoy the exuberance of real tone for the rest of your life! May it serve you well...

This will be an excellent moment of guitar acquisition joy.

It is cool that it is above freezing, :worthless:

Any moment now.....

This is not a problem. Take a deep breath, close your eyes, and say to yourself, "I am NOT going to think about that beautiful guitar sitting there in its case within reach .... I am NOT going to think about that beautiful guitar ..." etc. Over and over, like a mantra, keeping pace with your pounding heartbeat ...

There - feel better? :worthless:

And ???? :icon_study: It should have been opened by now.

OMG , you're right..... I made myself a mental note to see where this thread went to... ( and then forgot to look )...

Hopefully we'll hear from peacemaker ( or jazzpunk ) soon. While we might expect a delay as he plays it at first...

It has been a long time so we hope that all is ok.. Maybe we'll see a thread with pics soon...

A N T I C I P A T I O N!

The waiting is the hardest part.

Wait, wait--don't tell me!

OK, I can't think of anything else! Did you open up the case, or what?

Thanks Jazzpunk~ This is like hangin' outside the Honeymoon Suite the day after your best friend just married the Super Model. :D

Alright, alright . . . sorry guys! I'm sure you can forgive me for being completely smitten and spending every available moment with my new sweetie. I'll certainly write more later, but for now . . .

1) Jazzpunk is a great guy! There's always this nagging horror in the back of your mind when you do something like send $1700 to the other side of the country to a guy you've never met and know next to nothing about. JP not only didn't take my money and run :D he packaged this guitar up like it oughta be done and worked hard to get it shipped ASAP. And, he gave me an accurate description of the guitar and the condition it was in.

2) I am completely in love with this instrument. She is completely gorgeous. And the sound is . . . well . . . just immediately comfortable. It just sounds . . . right. It feels like I'm finding my true voice on the guitar . . . An amazing work of art that makes me feel like I'm completely unworthy. I am so in love . . .

And by the way, the nitro finish is fine. Thanks for the advice, guys!

Glad you've found a new lover.. I hope you have a wonderful time together.

I guess now is the right time to tell you, that buying your 1st Heritage is the hardest. Once you've got the 1st one in the stable G.A.S. takes over and you just can't help yourself....

Just giving you fair warning..

Yeah Heritage GAS is kinda a strange thing. A exclusive GAS . . . I started the year, thinking I was going to get a tele style guitar . . . maybe a Strat . . . but my friend has a Fender Telecaster / Strat custom shop.

So I think Fender American made are the bomb and good quality. No. It varies. Like I can have one with great finish and workmanship but tone doesn't grab me. Or one has good tone, shoddy workmanship, and lots of in betweens . . . And I don't want to pay Gibsonish prices to get their custom shop stuff. Even still my friend marvels over the quality of my H150, and can't believe it. And in his 2K amp, it sounds a like a dream and wants me to come over so he can play with it. I know he wants to ask to gig with it but doesn't ask me because he's cool and understands that guitars like to gig with their owners best.

He still things it's a 5K boutique even though I showed him Buffalo Bro's Heritages and the main site . . .

So next guitar for me is a heritage.
