One Piece vs Two Piece Back?

I just posted this question in "Jazzerous"'s topic on his new 575. (Congrats again, man!)

If you look at his pics, the back of his guitar looks to be a single piece of maple whereas mine is two. Anybody know when/why Heritage made that change? I don't know which is better or what the pros and cons are of either, I just noticed the difference.

It might be because of what is on-hand at the time of manufacture. Reason I say that is based on the fact that I have 2 Millies- one is one-piece back, the other is two-piece. I think Ren was asked that question by the group at the last PSP on the tour. Perhaps someone else can elaborate more.

Yep, Ren said just that... you work with what you have on hand.

And he made a point to add... that you control how your instument is made, if you want a one piece, just tell them.

It's really just a difference in appearance, not a tone or durability difference worth noting.

On my special orders I have requested one piece back for my 150s (3 of my 150s are one piece backs). I picked up my 150 quilt and it has a 2 piece back.

Terry McInturff says as long as the 2 piece backs are matchbooked, so the sound frequencies aren't canceled out, there is no difference between 2 vs 1 piece backs as far as tone goes.

As far as resale value, one piece backs seem to hold a higher value, even though tonally they may be equivalent.

It is getting harder to fine good wood to get a one piece back now.

Yeah, I had to laugh at that one when Ren made that statement. I had in the shop right then and there a custom ordered Millie (you played it, Fred) that was ordered 1 piece top/1 piece back. Guess what I got? And guess who doesn't really care, considering the final product! One piece boards look cool - yep. Add no functionality.

Robo has a good saying about Heritage guitars. Paraphrased - you may not always get exactly what you ordered, but you will get exactly what you wanted. Or something like. I think it's lost in translation from NC-speak to Mid-Westernism. :P

I remember that Millie ! That was sweet, a fantastic example of that model... and I also remember a nice amp that was there to plug into. Fun times....!!!
