barrymclark Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 A while back, I switched out the pickups in the 140 to a set of EMG's. It has literally sat ever since. Just been played a few times. It isn't horrible or bad sounding, it just lost something when I switched them out. I think I just look at it like it is just another guitar now and not the Heritage I was so proud to own. So... I think I am going to put everything back as it was and get my Heritage mojo back. There will be one minor difference: only two levelling screws. I believe this the cause of all the split rings.
pegleg32 Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 That's too bad the EMG's didn't work out Barry. I'm like you, I would have expected them to sound better although I have never owned any.

I'm like you, I would have expected them to sound better although I have never owned any. Thing is, I have always loved EMG's. I even still own a guitar with an EMG in it. I really think this is completely in my head. I think the part I just really, really didn't care for ... or better yet preferred the schallers for.... was the neck position. They sounded wonderful there.
FredZepp Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 Just a lesson learned in your quest for tone... I don't own any EMG's , so can't comment there.. but I tend to leave things as they are, if I like the sound. I wouldn't want the same pickups in multiple guitars, I think. I like each to have it's own personality and the pickups contribute to it. I've got a set of Schallers on the shelf , waiting for the right instrument to fall into.... So , are you thinking of changing the bridge pu to something else?....

It was kinda the opposite with the EMG's.
tbonesullivan Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 how would the leveling screws make the rings break more? anyway, unless you are playing lots of super clean stuff, or super heavy metal, EMGs just don't seem to give people what they want. What are you going to put in your Heritage? the original pickups or something new?
smurph1 Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 My 2 cents..I've never liked EMG's..sounded too loud and hi fi for my taste..Hope you find something you like,,
barrymclark Posted March 23, 2010 Author Posted March 23, 2010 how would the leveling screws make the rings break more? The torque it puts on the rings. I had the pickups in the rings without the pickups in the body and messed around with it to see what might be causing these to break. With the leveling screws, it definitely torques the snot out of it and I assume, that even when screwed down, that some of the torsion is still pressent and it breaks the thinnest part of the ring. That break would relieve the pressure. That is my assumption.anyway, unless you are playing lots of super clean stuff, or super heavy metal, EMGs just don't seem to give people what they want. With a three pickup guitar there would be many interesting tones available ... three P-90s, three single coils, three series or parallel humbuckers. With the triple shot switching it would be do able without drilling holes or using push pull pots and all of those options could be combined at will. D@mn, think I just gave myself GAS for a three pickup 140 !
shook494 Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 I would also put the originals back in. I play mostly metal music, but I never really got into the EMG's. They sound way too harsh for my ears.
Spectrum13 Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 You guys are smarter than me. I would have purchased a new amp that sounded good with the EMGs.

barrymclark Posted March 23, 2010 Author Posted March 23, 2010 You guys are smarter than me. I would have purchased a new amp that sounded good with the EMGs. Well, I actually have an amp I thought was really good for the EMG I have in another guitar: my multi use VOX! So, I really thought I would be very happy with this having played a Paul with EMGs in it. No dice. Something just said, "meh," when I played it. I was soooooo much happier with the originals. As mentioned, particularly with the neck position.
shook494 Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 Using Schallers? I have Schaller's and I love them for a good metal/hard rock sound for sure. Right now I have Seymour Duncan's in my 150. Antiquities in the neck and a Custom/Custom in the bridge.
brentrocks Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 i like the EMGs in this 150...but i think its because its so different from the other guitars i have. i would try some schallers in your 140
barrymclark Posted March 24, 2010 Author Posted March 24, 2010 i would try some schallers in your 140 Funny enough, that is exactly what I took out of it. I really did dig them. I think this is one of those lessons. If you like it well enough... leave it alone. haha.
