jazzbone Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 I've decided to swap out the Schallers on my new H-150 and have everything I need but, I got to thinking about the pickup rings. For those that have done this before, do you retro-fit the Schaller rings or do you go for new ones? I'm assuming the standard Gbrand would work? A little friendly advice needed... Thanks, Ed
yoslate Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 If you use new rings, you'll have to shape them to the curve of the top of the guitar on which you'll install them. Screwing them to the top without sanding them to conformity causes them to break. The carve of tops on various guitars is different. The best way to do this is to tape a fine grade (320+) sandpaper to the top, over the pickup routs, and gently sand the rings along the axis of the neck, until they conform to the top at both neck and bridge positions. Should give you a break-free custom fit.
tulk1 Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 The Schaller rings have a center hole for single screw pickups. If the color works, you're home. Otherwise, listen to the Prof 'Slate. He knows.
shook494 Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 I've been using the historic G brand rings for a while now. No sanding required. They will mold to the top of your guitar when you screw them in. Just do it slowly the first time. They cost a little more, but they are woth it in my opinion. I really dig em'. Hope this helps. http://store.gibson.com/Products/Hardware/...ckup-Rings.aspx
yoslate Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 Mounting rings from Stew-Mac, $8.00 a pair...if you want to comparison shop...
jazzbone Posted April 4, 2010 Author Posted April 4, 2010 Thanks all...I think the easiest thing to do would be to try and make the originals work and if I end up breaking them, go to plan "B". The advice is appreciated!
Kuz Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 I have replaced several set of rings recently. Prof Rob is correct. But, I have just shopped e-bay for arched pickup rings and they all have fit. I was search the elusive off-white cream rings. An artificial aged set was going for $100 (no thank you), but I found a set for $8.00 (off-white cream, arched and they fit "Yodder" - Blur/quilt 150 perfectly). And Shook is correct that the Gbrand arch rings work as well. I need to get a set for "Greeny". The only options after the mandatory "arched", is there is a Short and a Tall set. To my experience both will work, but the tall set looks better. Sometimes you don't have a choice, as in my case with the off-white cream arched set which was the short variety.
