nut removal

Has anyone ever removed a nut from their Heritage? I want to put a GraphTech nut in mine.

From what I read, you score around the nut with an xacto knife and knock it out with a quick blow to the side.

Sounds easy enough to screw up. Anyone every try?

Had it done to my dog!

But seriously, I leave nuts to my guitar tech with the proper tools and know how. There is an art to doing nut slots that I don't have the time to learn.

I had a Graphtech nut and setup done on my H-150 two weeks ago and cannot believe the dfference. I have had a Graphtech nut on my Strat for 30 years and it is great.

What a perfect time to run across this thread! Changed strings on my G&L legacy last night and a small piece of the original nut chipped away from inside the g-string slot (G-String slot, broken nut, *Insert joke here); looking at it with the string back on it looks normal, but the string is buzzing a little when hit open, and if you do a bend it makes a horrible creaking noise

I am thinking of going with the Graphtec Black Tusq XL

I'm sure there are a few folks here with the skills and proper equipment to do that, but since the nut is probably the single most important item in a proper setup, I would not do it on any guitar that was important to me. I would take it to the best pro I could find. On the other hand, it would be fun to experiment with it on a guitar one didn't worry about too much.
