barrymclark Posted April 18, 2010 Posted April 18, 2010 The 140 is back to stock FINALLY and boy does it sound GREAT! I never should have touched it to begin with. The only thing not stock is that there is only two leveler screws and not the four that normally come with Schallers.
golferwave Posted April 18, 2010 Posted April 18, 2010 Glad you've got the H-140 back to the way you like it!
FredZepp Posted April 18, 2010 Posted April 18, 2010 How cool. Redemption for the Schaller pickup, a preferrred pickup. I've got a set that will one day find their way into some axe.... Hey, this would be a good spot to post a pic of that 3 pickup wonder of yours.

Regarding Schallers, I'm just experiencing my first go around with a set which came with my recently purchased 2002 157. At first I was disappointed to find them, mainly due to the fact that I know that most guys here seem to swap them out a lot but they sound pretty good to me, kind of on the clean side maybe. I've been out of the loop with this kind of stuff. I tried searching here for more threads on the subject but no luck. I was wondering about the leveler screws. Mine only has 1 height adjust / leveler screw per side so I'm thinking the pick up rings are maybe not original. The bridge pup is not level with the strings (actually you spotted this last week when the Craigs list ad was posted), it's slightly tilted down towards the bridge, had it out a few times and the tilt is not adjustable. The bracket below the pick up has 3 screw holes in it so I'm guessing my rings are not original and that the proper rings would solve my problem. . Heres a pic...replacement rings? Thanks, Pete
barrymclark Posted April 18, 2010 Author Posted April 18, 2010 Hey, HFan. Have you lifted the pickups to see what they are? I believe, and someone correct me if I am wrong, that HRW's still use the four screw levelling screws per pickup. Unless the changed that, I'd suspect these to be Duncans. They could indeed be HRW's but with switched rings. The reason I suspect work has ben done is look at the bridge pickup itself. The exposed screw heads are normally closer to the bridge meaning someone lifted it and installed it 180 degrees from stock. May have come that too. Who knows but that is why I suspect work has been done but that work could easily be limitedto merely rotating the bridge pickup. The Schallers dirty up nicely. Raise the bridge pickup as much as you can without the annoying 'bink' noise you get when you rest your hand on the strings and the hot the pole pieces. I am very, very happy. Setzer to Slayer to All of Me and I change little to nothing but two dials on my amp. That is one hot ass guitar, btw. On my wish list, haha.

I don't think they have been rotated, could be wrong though. I'm thinking that if I got the pick up rings with the 2 leveling screws per side I would be able to adjust out the tilt. My pups have the brackets with 3 holes where the leveling screw is screwed in, currently since I have the single hole rings, I'm only using the center hole. I've seen pics here of the 2 screw per side rings. I think I could use the two outside holes on the bracket with those rings. Is it even critical if there is a tilt in the pickup as long as the exposed screw heads on top are at the correct distance from the strings? If so I won't have to bother with new rings. Anyone out there with knowledge on this subject? Thanks, Pete

Thanks, Pete I gotta tell ya, if that pickup hasn't been rotated 180 degrees... that is the first time I have ever seen that in 25 years and 10 of those were spent in instrument retail. Not to say that it just couldn't be... but that is a new one on me. If they are Schallers and single level screws, then that was probably done after the sale. Maybe not, but probably. The single screws are how nearly everyone else in the world does it. Won't be an issue. New rings are not necessary unless you just want to do it. Personally, I think the double screws are a pain. haha. I made mine the singles and am as happy as a clam about it. Again, that rotated pickup has me perplexed. It isn't hurting anything though and if you like the sound... I say don't fix what ain't broke. By tilting, you mean the face of the pickup is not parallel with the strings? If so, that is normal.
barrymclark Posted April 19, 2010 Author Posted April 19, 2010 thats great dude....got any sound clips? I sure do. Part of Sleep Walk in free time.
FredZepp Posted April 19, 2010 Posted April 19, 2010 I sure do. Part of Sleep Walk in free time. Hey .. that was cool. And the story about the keys....

Barry, I had a major brain fart..again. I meant to say that the neck pup was on a tilt, not the bridge pick up. And yes, I see now that the bridge pup is reversed, it's also nicely parallel to the strings. I'll pull it out one of these days as time permits. I'm not going to worry about the tilt on the neck pup since it doesn't appear to effect anything (only the 6 screws on top are active I believe). Thanks for the good info. P.S. I love the story of how you met your wife and found out about her great uncle. Too cool.
