Guest mgoetting Posted May 15, 2010 Posted May 15, 2010 Do I drill and put in the usual knob in the heel or do something else?
peacemaker Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 I couldn't bear the thought of putting a drill on my baby, so I had a pro do it for me. Put it on the back of the heel so that it faces my chest when I hold it. I thought that the placement would cause the guitar to want to flip forward, but it doesn't. I would never want to put one on the side of the heel pointing up at the headstock . . . playing up in the cutaway would be a pain. The guy who did mine took a total of <5min. He put on a button that is a little bigger than standard and is flat . . . viewed from the side, it looks more like a "T" and not like an upside-down cone like the standard button that came on the tail of the guitar. The T shape and bigger size holds the strap in place better and reduces the risk of [horror!] My Precious falling off . . . which has happened with pretty much every guitar I own at some point!! Other folks here have advised to use wax or something to lubricate the screw to reduce the risk of splitting the wood. This is all stuff I'm just repeating from the knowledgeable folks here . . . thanks, guys!
SouthpawGuy Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 Here's a pic from the old Heritage website, I don't think it's on the new site. It's shows the alternative position for a strap button on thicker bodied guitars.

The guy installed mine like the pic on the right, except that he put it in the plastic, not right into the back of the guitar. I guess there is a solid piece of wood behind the guitar back to screw into? (forgive my guitar architecture naivete)
