studiobill Posted May 18, 2010 Posted May 18, 2010 I am looking at Jay's site and he has a nice millenium dc for sale but he also has the Hamer newport pro for about the same price. I currently own 3 Heritage guitars so I am relatively certain I would like the millenium but by all reports the Hamer is a very nice guitar with a solid spruce top. I am a little concerned about the neck on the Hamer as I've never played one. Any opinions? Thanks Bill
tbonesullivan Posted May 18, 2010 Posted May 18, 2010 Hamers are top quality guitars. The necks are nice, and substantial currently. in the early 90s they could be kinda thin, but since then they are nice. OOOO!!! Wolfe also has some of the "earthen maple" super limited run Hamer studios. These are all topped with pieces from a big log of highly figured maple that was submerged for a while which gave it these really awesome mineral streaks. uh yes but anyway, hamer makes nice guitars. The Newport however is a different beast than a lot of semi hollows due to the spruce top, and also the seth lovers.
pressure Posted May 18, 2010 Posted May 18, 2010 The Hamer is fab. They also make it in a P90 version.
Kuz Posted May 18, 2010 Posted May 18, 2010 Hamers are great, but coming straight from Jay's mouth "They are more modern sounding guitar". If you are looking for a modern tone Hamers are very hard to beat. If you are looking for vintage tones I would stick with Heritage. Just my .02

I much prefer the Milli. But then, at practice a couple weeks ago, our other guitarist and I switched out for a while the other night...he had my Milli, I had his Tele. He's also got a Hamer. He didn't like the Milli's neck. Its such a personal choice. I recommend you try one out if possible.
Thundersteel Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 but coming straight from Jay's mouth "They are more modern sounding guitar". Hmmm... my Hamers don't sound more "modern" to me at all--maybe it's the Duncan Pups. My Studio sounds virtually identical to my LP!
studiobill Posted May 19, 2010 Author Posted May 19, 2010 Thanks for the input. I know hamer makes nice guitars. There is not a dealer anywhere near me. My concern is if I will like the neck. The 14 in. radius has me a little concerned. I currently have a 535, a beautiful 575, and a mill ultra. I thought the Hamer might be a nice change. I just sold 2 Brian Moore guitars and I want to get something soon before I do something stupid like pay bills with the money
Dick Seacup Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 I own guitars from both Hamer and Heritage. Nothing wrong with either. Asking this at a place called "The Heritage Owners Club" will probably lead to a lot of "get the Heritage"-type answers. I'll throw mine in there...get the Heritage. I like fine furniture, and a new (and most used) Hamer(s) is(are) certainly at that level. I also like functional tools which possess a certain je ne sais quoi that leads me to pull them out and actually play/create, that's where Heritage kicks all sorts of hometown ass. (Pardon my French)
Steiner Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 je ne sais quoi (Pardon my French) Holy sheep dip Dixie! Don't let the admin catch you talking like that. I'd bet your warning meter is about to go over the edge! My unoriginal and inappropriate $0.02 = "get the Heritage"
tulk1 Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 Thanks for the input..... I just sold 2 Brian Moore guitars and I want to get something soon before I do something stupid like pay bills with the money I've always liked the Brian Moore guitars. Which ones did you have and sell? Really love their single cut guitar. And yeah, that paying bills and be responsible, that really blows. I had $1k saved up for some PA gear; paid off a small credit card bill, instead. Wish I had the PA gear.
rjsanders Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 the millie dc is all maple w/ebony 'board. my neck's similar to gibson 60's. i don't know if there's any variance on neck profile in the DC line. with HRWs it is extremely articulate. the Hamer's got to sound different. both Jay & Graham are players and i expect will be able to give you good descriptions of the two guits over the phone while playing them...regardless of choice, enjoy,
